A glimpse into the current exhibition, Zip Zap Zop - an exhibition that explores play and attitudes toward play as a means of knowledge production.
Today, forms of play no longer manifest as directly recognizable activities, but instead conceal themselves within decision-making rituals, social roles, and the search for identity. We have been taught (or have taught ourselves) that play is not nearly as important as the “real” world. As a result, in the life of a young adult, play undergoes a certain sublimation, becoming reduced to entertainment. Yet the exhibition departs from the hypothesis that play does not actually disappear; it simply becomes more complex. Research through playing becomes a form of work that must inevitably be taken seriously - as though we had never taken playing seriously to begin with. It remains an internal human practice through which roles, attitudes, and spaces emerge through repeated cycles of trial and error. On this metaphysical level, the participating artists explore what play means to them through their own practices of playing.
The exhibition features six EKA contemporary art students Yiyang Sun (CHN), Éric-Olivier Thériault (CAN), Irmak Semiz (TUR), Suvi Päll (EST), Sarah Riley (USA), and Ronja Siitonen (FIN) who are presenting new works that combine performative and speculative dimensions.
