Imperial stout tartar, anyone?
have conjured a brew inspired by the tar legend of the town Tõrva, the place from which the brewmaster spawned. Collaborating with local tavern , before us is a thick imperial stout loaded with oats and peated malts. and joined me for tasting.
Pours like coal, with hefty amounts of sediment collecting at the bottom of the glass; moderate, persistent tan head sits above. Heavy peat backed by deep roast, bacon, and salt; warm booze is felt with touches of dark chocolate.
Taste follows with heavy peat and roasted malt prominence, with a backing of salty, sticky bacon and deep, dark chocolate. Roasty, toasty espresso notes join in to dampen that smoky abundance, bringing more balance, as do touches of herbs and spices, all rounding out that sharp, peaty abundance.
Aftertaste is heavy on the roast and peat as expected; chocolate notes are now more rounded to balance out this rauchfest, as is the presence of sticky, dark fruits. Medium-full, resinous, and mouth-coating in body, this hefty stout is long and dry in finish, complete with a smoky lasting touch.
Weird but wonderful for me. Throw this in a barrel and we’ve got a complexity unlike your average BA imperial stout. I’m excited just thinking about it; let’s hope they agree and already have some of this guy set aside for further sexiness.
