WHY WE SAY YUMASTÉ 😃🫶🏼
A little note from me, Sidsel, founder of yum.
I am not a yoga teacher, and I don’t pretend to have all the answers about yoga or spirituality. But after eight years of owning a yoga studio, working with many wonderful teachers and meeting thousands of people through yum, I have made a few observations.
Yoga can be a beautiful path towards greater awareness, physical and mental wellbeing, and a deeper understanding of ourselves.
But spirituality can also become a hiding place.
Sometimes, we use “light and love” to avoid the uncomfortable parts of being human: pain, anger, conflict, responsibility and the things within ourselves that are much harder to face.
To me, personal growth should not stop with the self.
If all our inner work never changes the way we meet other people, what is it really for?
One of the parts of yoga philosophy that means the most to me is the invitation to practise compassion, honesty and awareness – not only inside ourselves, but in the way we move through the world.
Look inward. Get to know yourself. Reflect.
But don’t stay in there forever.
Let what you learn travel outwards. Let it make you kinder, more curious and more conscious of how you affect the people around you.
And life does not always have to feel heavy, sacred or deeply serious. It passes in a blink, and none of us is quite as important as our egos occasionally like to believe. 😉 But we are important to one another.
The way we make people feel matters. A smile, a conversation, a little kindness or a moment of genuine connection can travel outwards like circles in water.
That is why I wanted yum to be a down-to-earth space where we can move, breathe, laugh and connect – without feeling that anyone is more enlightened, evolved or “better” than anyone else.
We are all simply human beings trying to find our way through life as best we can.
yumasté is our little reminder to take yoga seriously without taking ourselves too seriously – and that you don’t have to be calmer, bendier or more enlightened to belong. You are good enough as you are.
Then grab a coffee and take whatever you found on the mat with you out into the world.
yumasté yummy folks,
Sidsel 🦭
