For our upcoming exhibition Rodfæstet, Sara Martinsen works with wild grass harvested on Bornholm, shaping it into tactile surfaces and sculptural forms that remain closely connected to the landscape it comes from.

Working between art and material research, her practice is rooted in a careful attention to how materials behave and transform, and in how their inherent qualities can be made visible through process and composition.

Rodfæstet reflects on our relationship to materials and resources, and on the value of understanding where they come from and how they can be worked with in a more considered and attentive way.

The curation process for Connected: A Dialogue Between Nature and Craft has been extensive and highly personal. Galleri Sonja founders Birgit and Jimmy have traveled across Europe to hand-collect artists’ pieces, and artists have flown in from as far as Japan to create their works on-site. It’s through this kind of work that connections between makers and communities are strengthened—in real life, with human touch.

Bringing art and functional objects into your home can change how everyday actions feel. Everyday acts take on a different attention, the asymmetry of a mouth-blown jug, the weight of a hand-thrown cup, an egg eaten from a form shaped by function.

Visit Galleri Sonja this weekend and bring home objects to live with.

Reflective of Galleri Sonja’s core principles, the exhibition’s programming for 3daysofdesign encourages curiosity and touch—a way to engage with craft directly, learn about its application, and foster community around it.

Extending this dialogue, daily tea ceremonies guided by Tyst Te invite guests to gather around selected Japanese teas and a shared ritual. The tea ceremonies will be accompanied by cake service conceived specifically for the exhibition on June 11th and 12th by Spolsky Studio and Amalie Svare Nielsen, respectively.

On June 10th, join us for a knitting workshop hosted by Hedestrik, exploring traditional techniques and the use of raw wool from Western Jutland. Hedestrik teaches Dogmestrik, a technique using unprocessed raw wool, collected from residual farmers’ stock,  that is used to create unique textiles inspired by the land.

Please note that seats for the knitting workshop are extremely limited. To book, please contact [email protected]

PRINTEMPS by Cécile Daladier has now come to an end at Galleri Sonja. Curated and designed by Mentze Ottenstein, the exhibition brought together new ceramic works shaped around flowers, water and sculptural compositions, inviting personal arrangement and interpretation.

Thank you to everyone who visited the exhibition.

We look forward to welcoming Rodfæstet by Sara Martinsen, opening on 11 June and on view until 20 July.

For 3daysofdesign, Galleri Sonja brings its practice of curation and craft preservation to Copenhagen for the first time. Connected: A Dialogue Between Nature and Craft highlights not only the finished works themselves but also the envisioned process of shaping nature into art. Bringing together over a dozen artists with spatial design by Norm Architects, Galleri Sonja strips back the experience of interacting with design to its most essential beginnings: materiality.

Featuring Sara Martinsen, Von Linné Studio, Mette Skjærbæk, Straft, Julie Juhelndorff, Cecile Daladier, and Kawabi, among others, the exhibition invites guests to view plant fibers, paper, clay, glass, and textiles through their unique lenses.
