W**e & Walk with Lunch

We will meet in Zell-Merl for a Welcome Drink at 1:00 PM and then walk along the river and up into the vineyards for some spectacular views and history. From here we will walk along the Moselsteig Trail, stopping for a delicious lunch and of course w**e!

After lunch, we will walk back to our starting point, arriving close to 5:00 PM. The total walking time is around 4 Km (if you want more of a walk, I can give you information to start and end in the center of Zell).

There are two dates available in October:
Saturday, October 10
(We can also meet up at the Zell Federweisserfest in the evening)

Saturday, October 24

The cost, including a welcome drink, a guided, historical walk through the vineyards with w**e, and a delicious lunch with w**e is 48 euro/person. Payment is asked for ahead of time to reserve your spot and planning purposes, but of course if you’re not able to attend, you’ll be able to transfer your spot to someone else. Adults only please.

**In case of bad weather (pouring down rain, lightning) we will have lunch and w**e in a historical w**e cellar including information about the area and w**e, as well as a bottle of w**e to take home with you. **

Changing Seasons

In the last week I’ve seen summer coming to an end. The cooler weather, the sun setting earlier, the tractors in the vineyards harvesting the grapes, and the last Summer in the City.

Tonight was the last time of this season that the community came together listening to music and drinking w**e at Summer in the City at Winzerhof Turmblick Kaimt.

As I walked back home I felt a little bit of sadness about summer ending but also excitement for the fall. The Mosel is so beautiful in autumn, with the grapes all picked and the vineyards changing colors…no more different shades of green but autumn hues.

I look forward to hiking on the Moselsteig in the cooler temperatures, the Federweisserfest in Zell, and soon drinking Glühwein at the Christmas markets.

The Mosel is beautiful anytime of year. Zum wohl! Enjoy the w**e!

If you’re looking to taste some really good w**e in a charming village on the Mosel, check out the Pündericher Weinkehr this weekend. Many w**emakers open their cellars and gardens for you to try their w**e and food. Some will have live music.

Sign up for a W**e Tasting

Taste w**e in a beautiful Vinothek looking out at the steep vineyards. On Saturday, September 19 at 2:00 PM we will meet at Weingut Axel Pauly in Lieser to enjoy a guided w**e tasting. We will taste 8-10 w**es with the English speaking sommelier (German can also be spoken).

He will share information about the w**es and w**e making process and answer any questions you may have. You will also be able to order w**e by the bottle or case to take away.

The water, guided w**e tasting, and light snacks is 30€/person. Payment is asked for ahead of time to reserve your spot. If you’re unable to attend, you’re more than welcome to transfer your spot to someone else. If you’d like to reserve a spot, please send me a message or email me [email protected]. Spaces are limited.

The w**ery asked for a week’s notice of the number of people attending, so please sign up before September 12.

W**e Harvest

It’s an exciting time of year on the Mosel. Everywhere you go you see the vineyards full of color… bright green leaves and red and green grapes.

There’s no exact time w**emakers start to harvest their grapes. The type of grape, weather during the year, current weather, other commitments all determine when the w**emaker begins. Some started a week or so ago and some might not start until next week. I was so fortunate to help a local w**e maker with her harvest yesterday.

Some of you may remember my post about the amazing w**e tasting and tour I got to participate in this summer at Weingut Ernst Steffens in Merl. It was such an informative experience. So, when Silvia asked me if I would be interested in helping with the w**e harvest this year, I asked when and where.

I’ve walked above and below so many vineyards at the Mosel. Admiring every stage of the them in each season. I’m in awe of how steep they are and can’t imagine being on that sort of incline picking grapes. So, when we arrived to the flat vineyards in the shadow of the Alf-Bullay bridge, I was a little relieved it wasn’t so steep.

Silvia gave us gloves and shears and showed us how to cut the grapes off the vine and how to discard the grapes that were a treat for the birds or were not quite ripe. She also pointed out some of the lower grapes not to cut because the wild boars had a midnight snack.

As I begun cutting the beautiful red Dornfelder grapes I got into a rhythm throwing them into the bucket, moving it along the vines and handing it over to be dumped into the large container attached to the tractor. The hum of the tractor, the sun shining in between the vines, the sounds of the Mosel just steps away were all so peaceful.

After we finished, I took a moment to look at all the grapes that were just growing on the vines ready to be pressed. As I ate my lunch I looked out at the Mosel and vineyards feeling so proud to be a part of this.

We went back to the w**ery and within minutes we watched the grapes we’d just picked getting pressed. Seeing all of those grapes getting pressed down to juice was pretty magical. While watching, Silvia’s mom came over with two glasses of their Dornfelder Rose from last year for us to try.

Silvia and her family work so hard throughout the year making w**e, you can see their passion and taste it in every glass. They were so kind giving me the opportunity to be a small part in their w**e-making process.
