The Cellar is open again and we’re starting the new live music season with a cracking mix of touring musicians, Irish voices and some familiar local faces.

04.09. IKE’S CREEK / USA
Tonite, IKE’S CREEK roll into Hamburg from the USA, bringing their blend of California Roots, Americana and Bluegrass to the Cellar. Led by multi-instrumentalist Korey Simeone, the Los Angeles band has earned a reputation for first-class picking, bluesy vocals and seriously fine musicianship.

11.09. LARRY DONLON / IRE
Irish Folk, pub classics and a few favourites from both sides of the Atlantic. Longford-born Larry has been playing and singing since his teens and is very much a familiar face around Hamburg these days.

12.09. CARLEY’S WRECK & RUIN / UK
A British duo serving up what they call “trashy roots”: raw, rhythmic blues with Delta grit, old-time country, rock’n’roll and a wonderfully dark edge.

18.09. MENSE
Rock’n’Roll, pub and rock classics with one thing firmly in mind: giving the room a good time. Expect everything from Chuck Berry and CCR to Tom Petty, The Beatles and his own songs.

19.09. NINA & CHRISTIAN
Irish & Scottish Folk — songs, tunes and plenty of Celtic spirit for a Saturday night downstairs.

25.09. KENAN FLANNERY / IRE
Dublin songwriter, storyteller and proper folk troubadour. Irish ballad roots meet American folk, raw guitar and a voice made for stories. Kenan has spent the past few years touring extensively across Ireland, the UK, Europe and the US.

26.09. DECLAN O’CONNELL / IRE
Songs & Stories from a Cork-born voice we’ve known for many years — Irish ballads alongside Dylan, Cash, Neil Young and the great American folk tradition.

And, of course, the Cellar isn’t only alive on Friday and Saturday nights.

Our Irish Trad Session is back every Sunday, the Old-Time & Bluegrass Session takes over every 1st and 3rd Wednesday, and upstairs it’s Pub Quiz every Thursday from 8pm.

Seven live acts, Trad and Bluegrass sessions throughout the month, and plenty of familiar faces coming back down the stairs.

September is looking mighty good.

QUESTIONS WILL BE ASKED.

It’s Pub Quiz night at the Rover — time to gather the people who know everything, the ones who think they know everything, and that one mate who somehow knows the answer nobody else does.

Expect a proper mix of questions, educated guesses, wild guesses and the occasional moment of unexpected brilliance.

Quiz starts at 7pm.
Teams of up to 7 people — no reservations, just come along and grab a table.

A good team helps. A good pint might too.

After the summer break, live music returns to the Celtic Cellar tonight!

Kicking things off from 7pm is our OLD TIME & BLUEGRASS SESSION — back in its regular spot on every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month.

Banjos, fiddles, guitars, a few good tunes and the Cellar doing what it does best.

Good to have it back.

THE CELLAR IS BACK!

Summer’s had its turn — now it’s time to head back downstairs.

This Wednesday, 2 September, we’re reopening the Celtic Cellar after its summer break, and who better to throw the opening party than our Old-Time & Bluegrass Session? From 7pm, the instruments come out, the taps start flowing and the Cellar gets its music back. Banjos pickin’, fiddles singin’, guitars keeping things moving — just the way we like it.

And that’s only the beginning.

Thursday means Pub Quiz — a few rounds of questions, a table full of questionable experts and that glorious moment when somebody confidently gives an answer that is spectacularly wrong. Get your team together, grab a pint and see how clever you really are.

Then on Friday, IKE’S CREEK return to the Rover! Straight out of Los Angeles, they bring a cracking mix of Roots Americana, Bluegrass and blues, with brilliant songwriting, bluesy vocals and some seriously fine musicianship. Led by the fiery fiddle playing of Korey Simeone, these lads have even taken Best Band at the Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest — so expect strings flying, grooves rolling and a proper taste of California roots music down in the Cellar.

And come Sunday, another old friend returns from the summer break: our mighty Irish Trad Session. Musicians around the table, tunes passing from one to the next, a pint within reach — Sunday nights at the Rover are finally back where they belong.

The Hamburg weather seems to have got the memo as well: clouds, wind and a fair chance of rain. In other words, absolutely perfect pub weather.

The terrace isn’t going anywhere just yet — but from this week on, the hot nights are back downstairs.

Looks like summer isn’t quite finished with Hamburg yet — there are still a few hot days ahead of us. And once those are done, the hot nights are heading back downstairs.

Our summer break in the Celtic Cellar ends on August 31st, and from September onwards the basement comes alive again. Lights on, taps flowing, instruments out — and that familiar sound of live music filling the Cellar once more. Friday and Saturday nights are back where they belong: downstairs at the Rover.

Every 1st and 3rd Wednesday, our Old-Time & Bluegrass Session returns as well. Banjos pickin’, fiddles singin’, guitars keeping the rhythm and a circle of musicians letting the tunes find their own way through the night.

And then there are the Sundays. Our Irish Trad Session keeps doing what it’s always done — bringing musicians, friends and strangers together around the tunes until nobody feels much like a stranger anymore.

Before we head back underground, though, there’s one more summer session on the terrace this Sunday. Irish tunes in the open air, a cold pint on the table and hopefully a warm Hamburg evening to see the summer out in style.

So make the most of those last hot days — we’ll keep the drinks cool.

Come September, the hot nights are back in the Celtic Cellar.

A wee announcement — and we mean it.

You may have noticed we love football at the Rover. Rugby, Gaelic Games, the lot. But this summer, you won't find the World Cup on our screens.

Why? Well. There's the small matter of a FIFA that long ago confused itself with a personal piggy bank. There's a host nation that's turned away fans — and tournament participants of all kinds, players, referees, staff members — at the border. And there's the rather unfortunate business of what the current political climate in the United States has done to the rest of the world these past months.

We're an Irish pub. And like the best Irish pubs, we stand for something: openness, tolerance and the firm belief that music, Guinness and good company have a way of bringing people together — regardless of where they're from. A tournament that can't uphold those values won't be finding a home on our screens.

The Guinness will be cold. The craic will be mighty. We'll find other reasons to gather round — and knowing this crowd, we won't have to look far.

Our weekly Pub Quiz is back tomorrow night — sharpen those pencils, dust off those brain cells and get your team together for a night of craic, competition and cold Guinness. There is no better way to spend a Thursday evening, and you know it.

One small but important change: from now on, the Quiz kicks off at 8pm — one hour later than before. More time to settle in, order a pint and pretend you've been brushing up on your general knowledge all week.

Science walks into an Irish pub...
No, that's not the beginning of a joke — that's Wednesday night at the Rover.

„Wissen vom Fass" brings researchers from every field into Hamburg's bars and pubs — and over a drink, curious minds get the chance to ask questions until the last glass is empty. Since 2015, DESY and the University of Hamburg have been taking science out of the lecture halls and laboratories and bringing it straight to the people — no prior knowledge required, just an open mind and a comfortable seat.

This Wednesday, the Irish Rover is one of over 40 venues across the city hosting a talk — and we think a Guinness in hand makes for a rather fine thinking aid.
Come with questions. Leave with answers. And maybe a second pint.

JERRY K. REED is one of Hamburg's finest kept secrets — a solo artist who captures the mood of grey afternoons and dimly lit bars in his songs like nobody else. His reduced blend of blues, jazz and soul is brutally honest at times, sharply observed at others, and there's always a wry gallows humour lurking somewhere in the lyrics. An EP, two full albums and close to 100 gigs in, Jerry knows exactly what he's doing — and what he's doing is getting under your skin.

JOSH BLACKBIRD comes from Hagen with a head full of rock 'n' roll and a fistful of honest songs. Schooled by the great American storytellers — Petty, Springsteen, Neil Young, Mike Ness — he knows that all you need is a good story and the nerve to tell it straight. Hope, heartbreak, low life and the occasional girl. Acoustic, raw and completely disarming.

Put these two on the same stage for the very last live music night in the Celtic Cellar before the summer break — and you've got something special. The Cellar goes quiet after Sunday, so this is your last chance to catch live music downstairs until September. Pull up a stool, order a pint and let them do the rest.

This Week at The Irish Rover — Last Call for Live Music!

Summer is here, Hamburg is basking and the living is easy. But before you disappear to your balcony or wherever the sun takes you — we have one last magnificent week of live music lined up. After Sunday, the Celtic Cellar heads into its well-earned summer break. Live music returns in September, and the second half of the year holds some very special treats. But first — this week. Don't waste it.

THURSDAY, our trusty PUB QUIZ at 7pm sharp. Teams of up to six, cold pints, warm arguments. The usual.

FRIDAYbrings STEPHEN KAVANAGH to the stage. Dublin-born and steeped in music from the very beginning, Stephen had a guitar in his hands at 13 and was busking the streets of Dublin by 14. His style weaves Irish folk, swing, blues and country into something entirely his own — warm, unhurried and deeply felt. A Hamburg institution for nearly three decades, and every bit as good as the first time. A perfect Friday night.

SATURDAY is something special. JERRY K. REED meets JOSH BLACKBIRD — two songwriters, two very different voices, one mighty evening. Jerry's intimate blend of blues, jazz and soul hits hard, always with a wry gallows humour lurking in the lyrics. Josh, schooled by Petty, Springsteen and Neil Young, knows that you don't need fancy chords to tell a great story. Honest, raw and not to be missed.

And SUNDAY — our last IRISH TRAD SESSION of the season. The real thing. It would be a shame to miss it. So don't.
