On Summer 2018 Guido and I met
Kazumi. Self proclaimed Kaiserin von Tiergarten.

She arrived from Osaka to Tokyo in her late teens to settle into the household of Professor Tatsuhiko Shibusawa — the only one to translate the Marquis de Sade into Japanese without apologizing. Essayist of black magic, demonology, eroticism. Someone serious.
And Kazumi lived inside that house,
inside that work,
inside that inheritance of ideas that refuse easy boundaries.

Her tongue was calibrated to the same frequency as Shibusawa’s pen. Sharpened. Precise. I don’t retain details — never could — but I know exactly what it feels like to be alive: that was it. Kazumi fed words that emerged from depths most humans never explore.

Every sunny day sitting in Tiergarten, a tiny Kazumi in a tiny bikini, always at the same spot. She had studied the movement of light the way others study philosophy. She brought old newspapers collected across the City West — her maps were those papers (she could remember the price of corn and tortilla in Mexico from last year like nothing), her coordinates the Philharmonie, the Konzerthaus.
She would share the best tips for classical concerts in Berlin. She shared this without expecting anything in return.

Beyond that she shared passion for passion itself.
I loved the days that i would encounter her.

A summer ago, she stopped appearing.

I’ve looked for her in the usual places. The concert halls. The lawns in Tiergarten. And the city itself seems smaller without that impossible presence, that woman who made freedom look like the simplest thing in the world.

But wherever she is, I’m certain: she remains the most absolutely free person I have ever encountered. Uncompromising, yes. But with that final grace the Marquis could never touch — the one that doesn’t need to destroy anything to be free. Just to be. Just this.

She was provocative. She was beautiful. She was free.

Berlin: Did you ever get to meet her? I can’t find anything on her! Like another one of my ghosts, another one of my tales… she existed! I wish i could touch her legacy, books, her glasses that looked so much… ok if you got a tip for me, i got tacos for you.

Berlin, my love,

We go through joy and pain and a myriad of feelings in the same days.

Today I walked through Tiergarten, and it touched me to recall twenty-six years of beautiful memories there. I thought of the Tuntenwiese, that garden of delights that is an ecosystem — beyond fun, against loneliness, for generations of gay men. I thought of the shadows of the trees, the statues of princesses and gents and their gazes toward the future, the statues of animals and their spirits. I remembered Kazumi, the Japanese “Kaiserin” of Tiergarten, who would sit there every warm sunny day reading old newspapers and watching the day go by — wherever she might be this summer.

On Saturday evening we sat to watch the Pride go by, by the Rembrandt statues, under the Siegessäule, and I won’t forget it: the man collecting Pfandflaschen by the Tuntenwiese; older men washing their cute 🍑s at the shower there; two young Muslim mothers giggling with their kids, looking and not looking; and then, suddenly, the Flaschensammler rolling out his carpet to pray. His prayer was so heartfelt, so full of compassion, that it was a strong sight I could not condemn to a photo. But it stays in my heart, and in the heart of anyone who witnessed that beautiful moment.

Nothing makes sense. It doesn’t have to.

I am not in the mood to be much these days. I have no recipes for life, but I am here to make tacos whenever you need them. And maybe that is just about enough.

In prayers,
Jorge, your Taco Kween

There’s a difference between a taco and a ritual.

Most start with a bag of flour. Ours start with water, fire & limestone.

This is nixtamal — whole heirloom corn cooked slow, washed by hand, ground fresh in our craft mill. 3,500 years of technique, done the way it’s always been done.

This is Taco Kween Deluxe. For the moments that deserve it.

Thank you Stella for inviting the Taco Kweenz to hold court on in your beautiful space!

Thank you all for coming!

48H Neukölln took me back to that special neighborhood, where a zillion years ago i did the first pop ups!

We had a simple menu; the kind that i love: tacos that taste like tacos and nothing else. Because everything falls in place for good, when we serve others with joy.

thank you for the encouragement and support, but mostly your friendship 👸🏽.

Want tacos for your next party? Send a dm with your wishes!

Love,

Jorge, your Taco Kween
