The Tavern owners Dean and Lori have been gardening on a small allotment in Žižkov for 20 years. It’s where they got the idea for UrbanGarden.cz, the little web project that eventually planted the seed for The Tavern!

This year’s tomato harvest has been huge, so they are sharing it with their friends, regulars and guests. Stop by Friday the 4th for a special BLT made with one of these local tomatoes, hand-picked perfectly ripe.

This is a lot of our staffs' favorite time of year at The Tavern, when our garden starts producing all our heirloom tomatoes. 🍅

This tomato and mozzarella salad for the staff held nine different varieties!

And our Ukrainian staff REALLY know their tomatoes. They love tomatoes. They talk about tomatoes. They inspect the tomatoes. They have opinions about the tomatoes. 😂

We think a lot of it comes from growing up a little closer to the earth in that region of the world. They all seem to have a farm at home or know someone with one.

Anyway, tomato season at The Tavern has officially begun! ❤️🍅

Thanks for visiting us at Cuketafest '26 in Žižkov! Last week we got back to our roots and had a little food stand just for the fun of it!

We are big gardeners and this time of year there is an onslaught of zucchini, so we thought selling some in our neighborhood of Žižkov would be fun. Our neighbor Stáňa let us use the space in front of a sweet shop she recently leased and was reconstructing.

And a little food stand like this? This is exactly how The Tavern began.
Our first event in 2009 was a small affair with just a spinach burger (still on The Tavern menu!)

We called ourselves "Urban Garden" because we had been working on a website www.urbangarden.cz that was about the new farmers' markets, gardening, recipes, and community.

Because of our interest in food, farmers, and cycling we were approached by our friend Daniel Mourek from Nadace Partnerství who helped open the first Prague farmers' markets and helmed the Vitkov Trail project.

He asked us to set up a stand at a bicycling event for families during European Mobility Week.

After the first event we were approached by Jiří Sedláček
who with his wife Šárka opened the first farmers' market in Prague. He asked us to set up a stand at the new Jiřího z Poděbrad market.

After this event we got the bug! We only did street events which had community slants and pro-neighborhood agendas. We shed the Urban Garden brand and leaned into burgers--Lokal Burger. Our mission was to cook only with local Czech ingredients.

For two years we did street events and pop-ups in bars, the first pop-ups in Prague (totally swiping the idea from NYC and LA.)

And one day we decided we wanted to go all-in and invest in a food truck.

But we prepped all the food from our flat, which is a bit dodgy, but it's how everyone gets a start.

And a food truck needs a commercial kitchen,so in 2011 we leased a small bar in a seedy part of Vinohrady and Žižkov, and called it The Tavern.

It would be Prague's first burger joint--burgers and cocktails. We opened with only three burgers and potato chips--no fries. People thought we were stupid. 😂

We're finishing up our 2026 apricot harvest this week! Last week we delivered about 150L to our brand partner for fermentation and distillation.

This will be wild-fermented apricot brandy from organic apricots from our small garden plot in the Žižkov neighborhood of Prague, making it a very special Meruňkovice!

You'll be able to try some in a few months !

We are glad the harvest is over, it really kicked our butts! 😂
