Chalkie's Kitchen

Chalkie's Kitchen Times are tough for many people at the moment and the reality is we don't know how long it will continue.

We want to help in a small way and are using our kitchen to produce food for those who are in need and are struggling to put food on the table.

For the past months we have been looking after a few needy people supplying them with food and drinks daily but having seen the amazing efforts that Dawn Palmer is doing trying to help and support those who are very much struggling at the moment we will be working closely with her and others providing clothes and food to the most vulnerable.

We will be a drop off and collection point in the Coral Bay, Peyia area for anyone wishing to donate items of clothing. Male, female and children’s items needed but we are advised there is a distinct lack of male clothing being donated.

We will also be making food for those in need and would be most grateful if any of those establishments who helped before or any other catering venues offered to help provide hot or cold food that can be collected and distributed to those desperate for food.

Chalkies is open from 11am Tuesday to Sunday.

Good Morning.
It's been a while since we posted any updates and we felt we should just let all those that have supported us in the past know that we are still going and still helping as many as we can.

In fact we issue approximately 20-30 "Pay it Forward" vouchers daily to those who are in desperate need providing between 140 - 210 free meals per week.

In addition we are still also helping a number of people with other issues and trying to make life a little easier where we can.

We have been approached by a third party to help one particular young mother who is living a living nightmare at the moment.

She has escaped an abusive relationship with her children and is in hiding at the moment, unfortunately she has no money and no source of income.

She has tried to leave the country, but she needs her partners consent to take the children and he has categorically refused. She was refused entry onto the airplane when she attempted to leave

The police have been involved but not been very supportive or helpful. The British High Commission is not offering any support and various agencies in the UK who have been approached can do very little to help either.

This is a difficult situation as this young lady is scared for hers and her children's safety, cannot go back to a violent home and is simply desperate to get back home.

We are very limited in what we can do to help legally but feel we need to help her by employing a solicitor to take this matter on and give her the support she needs and enable her to get the courts permission to leave with her children.

This will take time and money, and, in the meantime, she will need financial support to cover the costs of food and accommodation.

This is not anything that we are experienced in, but we feel that we have an obligation now that we know about her situation to do all we can to help.

A couple of weeks ago we were looking for help in rehoming a young homeless man and trying to help him get his life back on track.
We were feeding him daily and got him back into a good position mentally and so much so that he has now managed to find himself a job and accommodation.

Sometimes just a little kindness goes a long way.

Unfortunately our resources are very low and all we can basically do is offer to a daily meal to those who are struggling, and despite the fact that we seem to have a little sense of normality going on in Cyprus at the moment there are honestly thousands of people still struggling without the basics.

Can anyone help please?

We have a great young Cypriot lad who has fallen on hard times and has been living on the streets for 7 months.

He contacted us today and has walked from Paphos to Coral Bay for a meal.

He’s also had an interview and been offered a waiters position but he cannot be homeless for obvious reasons.

Does anyone have a spare room or studio we could possibly rent for him?

The past year has been a sad and traumatic affair for many people. Despair, loneliness and isolation.

Life is a blessing and when it is shared with friends and loved ones even in the darkest days you can find a smile.

Unfortunately many here are alone and lonely, no friends, family or help to carry them through.

Please read the link below from Helping Hearts and if you can help in any way let’s try and get this man back home so his family can give him the love and respect he deserves as they say goodbye.

We attended a number of funerals last year and being buried away from home without those who love you close is one of the saddest things you can imagine.

As many of you know we have been trying for the past year to help as many needy people as we can as Chalkie's Kitchen.

With the help of dedicated volunteers and the amazing support from the community we have managed to serve almost 23,500 meals, provide 1,500 meal vouchers and also deliver 500 food parcels.

Times are still difficult for many and we still have a high demand for help but we cannot continue to rely on the goodwill of the same people continuously.

We had considered stopping now but the feeling of letting people down is not something that sits comfortably so we will continue with the Pay it Forward Scheme and provide meal vouchers to as many as possible.

We will hopefully fund the majority of this through Chalkie's Bar and we will donate €1.00 from every meal purchased towards the scheme. We don't expect in these difficult times that it will generate us a significant number of vouchers but every little will help at this time.

We would also be very grateful if any establishments or venues will join the scheme and accept vouchers for meals.

Howard at Peyia Chippy has offered to help support the scheme and we will speak again with those that supported the scheme before.

The past few weeks have been a major challenge.

Lockdowns, lack of donations and a constant stream of requests has been very difficult.

We have managed to deliver over 70 food parcels in the past 3 or so weeks but now we have reached a point where we have to make a decision on whether we can continue to help people or not.

I was told today of 3 people living in a closed down building whom we don’t have the resources to help.

We have a list of families we can no longer support and so many others that we can’t even look to help.

This problem is not going away soon, it’s being compounded daily and with zero initiatives from the government to tackle the problem, it’s going to be a long hard struggle for many for a long time.

Without help from the community the problems these people face will only increase and manifest into other issues.

We would like to thank again everyone who has helped, supported and donated since March 2020 and enabled us to at least give a small amount of comfort to those we have looked after.

Having provided almost 23,500 meals, approximately 500 food parcels and 1500 meal vouchers we can honestly say that each and everyone of you have gone above and beyond to help those in need.

Thank you

Having spent the past few days pondering what if anything we can do to help people through this latest lockdown we have decided that we will put family food parcels together and deliver to those in need.

Each parcel will contain the basics, eggs, bread, milk, butter, canned meats, soups, vegetables, toiletries etc and would hopefully last a week.

Drop off point RSS Logistics Peyia who are open 8am - 4pm Monday - Friday (Excluding Easter Friday & Monday)

Again due to funding and resources we can’t do as many as we would like to but we can help a few.

Our latest total as of Saturday on meals cooked and delivered was 22,988

Times are still hard and people are still very much wondering when this nightmare will stop.

We have had to scale what we do down significantly, we’re only actually able to look after about 15% of the people we were looking after before, which is very sad. The phone rings and messages received daily from people needing help and it’s heartbreaking having to say that we can’t help. Especially when we have been looking after them and feeding them in the past.

Some of these people have not worked since October 2019 through no fault of their own and are so way below the poverty line it’s incomprehensible.

Life is tough at the best of times but when your daily existence is fighting eviction, living in the dark as you have no electric, trying to feed your family and keep your children clothed and at school it’s not a life it’s a battle.

Regardless of nationality, religion, s*x or age, no one should be living like this and it’s an embarrassment to us, the country and society that this can happen.

So many within our community have helped so far and we are so grateful but now our governments all over the world need to put mental health and poverty at the top of their agendas.

Absolutely gutted we can’t do anymore than we are to help.

So sad!!

So this week has been a very quiet week in comparison to the past year and we have drastically reduced the number of people we are feeding.

We have kept our most vulnerable people on the list and are continuing to help and monitor them and support with other things where we can.

Unfortunately providing food to people on a daily basis is hard work, prepping, cooking and packing take many man hours, delivering again relies on the good will of others and their time.

The biggest issue is always the funding of this though and it is very costly to do. Realistically if we said each meal we have produced and delivered cost €2.00 including the packaging and delivery we would have spent somewhere in the region of €50,000.00 in the last year providing food to those in need.

Much of that money has come from the kind generosity of those who have donated money, food and other items. Also some great support from various local business and individuals who have paid for items as well.

In essence this post is just to put things in perspective and show you how much this community has done.

It’s amazing and there are so many grateful people out there due to your support and still many more that remain grateful as we keep on helping them.

Thank you all

21,438, free meals, delivered and now were scaling down.

Financially we cannot continue and also we cannot continue to rely on the goodwill of so many donating hours and hours daily to do this. We will continue to help as many as we can but on a very much more selective basis. Roughly 20-30 people a day.

A big thanks to everyone who has contributed, supported and helped us do what we have done. It’s been an amazing journey so far, plenty of good times and plenty of sad times, food, funerals, tears and emotions have been the main themes and we wouldn’t change a second of it.

As much as I wish we could mention everyone who have been part of this It’s impossible as there have been far to many but certainly some need to be acknowledged.

Those who have cooked literally thousands of meals, Billy Bracken, Karen, Hayleigh, Kurtis, those who have delivered food, Elaine, Angie, Sarah, Lainy, Allan, Liliana, Anne, Dave, Peter, Paul Carter, Donna for being ever present, Elle, Andrea and all at RSS for being an invaluable lifeline.

Donators, contributors, supporters, and others who have been constantly helping, Maisie for showing us how selfless children can be and also to everyone else.

We have so many people who continue to need help, we’ve laughed with them, cried with them, rehomed some, repatriated others, been to funerals and hospitals and yet we haven’t even gotten close to breaking the surface.

We can only hope that things will get better and those that we can’t help at the moment find a way to get back on track.

Chalkie’s has been a big, part of people’s lives for the past year and our promise is to continue to help when and where we can.
