Notes from Nosara’s low tide

You’ll hear them before you see them.
A sharp, whistling cry cutting across the rhythm of the surf—then a flash of black and white skimming low over the wet sand. The American Oystercatcher is a bird of the threshold, perfectly at home in the in-between space where land gives way to sea.

In Nosara, they patrol the reefy shallows and tide pools of Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada, moving between slick rocks and shifting sands with surprising grace. Their long, orange bills are made for prying open shellfish—surgical, precise, patient. At first glance, they’re solitary. But often, if you’re still enough, you’ll spot them in pairs, partners for life.

In a town shaped by surf and rhythm, the oystercatcher is a quiet reminder that life thrives in the liminal zones—between tides, between seasons, between one step and the next.
