METEOR SHOWER
The peak of the 2026 Perseid meteor shower falls exactly at noon on August 13, China Standard Time. Although the maximum does not occur during the nighttime, both the nights of the 12th and 13th are completely free of moonlight interference, making them the best nights for meteor watching. This year’s shower also coincides with a total solar eclipse, adding another highlight for observers.
In Shenzhen, the shower’s radiant point rises above the northeastern horizon at 21:30. After midnight, as the radiant climbs higher, the meteor count will increase. The expected zenithal hourly rate (ZHR) is about 100, but depending on the observer’s latitude and observation time, the actual number of visible meteors will be roughly several tens per hour.
The actual meteor flux is heavily influenced by the altitude of the radiant above your local horizon, so for the Perseids it is essential to persist until the predawn hours. Keep in mind that even in summer, temperatures can drop sharply after midnight in many inland areas. Be sure to check the forecast, dress warmly, and make yourself comfortable to welcome the meteors.
