Gulai Ayam:
Slow-Cooked, Not Instant. Because Real Flavor Takes Time. 🍛🥥
Most places use instant curry paste. We don‘t.
At The Pawon 8碗, our Gulai Ayam is made from scratch — every single day. No shortcuts. No premixes. Just fresh spices, real coconut milk, and patience.

What makes ours different 🧐
❌ Other restaurants: Open a pack of ready-made gulai paste. Add water. Done in 10 minutes.
✅ The Pawon: Toast and grind our own coriander, cumin, turmeric, galangal, and lemongrass. Sauté until fragrant. Simmer chicken in fresh coconut milk for hours until tender.
The difference? You can taste it. Deep, layered, aromatic — not just salty and oily.

What’s in the bowl 🍴

• Free-range chicken, slow-cooked until fall-off-the-bone tender
• Potatoes and carrots simmered in the same rich gravy, absorbing all the spices — adding natural sweetness and a hearty texture
• A hint of chili for warmth (not overwhelming heat)
• Rich golden gravy made from fresh coconut milk and hand-ground spices

Why it matters 💬
A guest from Malaysia told us:
”I‘ve tried gulai at many places in Shanghai. Most taste like they came from a packet. Yours tastes like my grandmother’s — real spices, real coconut, real love.“
That‘s the feedback we work for.

Kwetiaw Goreng Seafood or Stir Fried Rice Noodles: The Wok-Fried Noodles Every Indonesian Misses 🍜🔥
📍 Found at The Pawon 8碗, Shanghai
If you‘ve ever walked past a night market in Jakarta or Surabaya and smelled that smoky wok hei drifting through the air… you know exactly what I’m talking about.
That‘s Kwetiaw Goreng Seafood. And yes, we have it here in Shanghai. 🇮🇩✨

What makes it so good? 🧐
Flat rice noodles, stir-fried on high heat until they get that smoky char. Tossed with shrimps, squid, fish balls, egg, bean sprouts, and greens. Then glazed with sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) and a touch of chili.
Topped with crispy fried shallots and served with a lime wedge.
Simple ingredients. Incredible flavor.

My honest taste test 👅
First bite: savory and slightly sweet.
Second bite: the wok hei hits you — that unmistakable smoky flavor.
Third bite: squeeze the lime and everything brightens up.
The noodles are chewy but not mushy. The seafood is fresh, not rubbery. And those crispy shallots on top? Chef’s kiss.

Storytime 💬
One of our regular guests from Surabaya told us:
”I‘ve been looking for this taste since I moved to Shanghai. The first time I tried yours, I literally closed my eyes and felt like I was back at the night market near my house.“
He comes back every week now. We love that.

Discover Semur Daging: Indonesia’s Comforting Beef Stew 🥩✨
If you love hearty, aromatic stews, Semur Daging is a must-try! This Indonesian classic features tender beef simmered in a sweet, spiced soy sauce-based broth. At The Pawon 8碗, we honor its rich history and craft it fresh daily. 🇮🇩❤
A Dish with History 📜
Semur Daging traces back to Dutch colonial influence in Indonesia — the word “semur” comes from the Dutch smoor (to braise). Local cooks added sweet soy sauce (kecap manis), nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon, creating a uniquely Indonesian flavor. Today, it’s a beloved festive and everyday dish.
Our Cooking Process 👨‍🍳

• Marinate beef cubes in garlic, shallots, and spices overnight.
• Sear the beef until browned.
• Simmer slowly with sweet soy sauce, star anise, nutmeg, and a hint of tamarind for 2+ hours until fork-tender.
• Finish with fried shallots for crunch.
No shortcuts — every batch is made from scratch.
Taste Profile 🍴
The broth is deeply savory-sweet, with warm spice notes and a velvety texture. The beef is fall-apart tender, soaking up all the flavors. Best enjoyed with steamed jasmine rice or coconut rice. 🍚🥥
A Story from Our Guest 💌
One day, a student from Indonesia came to eat our Semur Daging. After his first bite, he started crying. He told us the taste was exactly the same as his mom’s cooking back home. He hadn’t returned to Indonesia for 2 years due to his studies, and this dish brought back all the warmth of home. Right there at the table, he called his mom and said, “Mom, I found a place in Shanghai that makes Semur Daging just like yours. I’m so happy.” ❤
