This week has been historic for our community.
With the opening of Palestine Uprooted: Nakba, Past and Present Canadian Museum for Human Rights Palestinian stories have found a place within one of Canada’s most important cultural institutions.
For Yafa Café, this moment represents nearly two decades of work. The journey began shortly after moving from Ottawa, when the Museum was first announced. What started as a call for Palestinian voices to be included became years of advocacy, dialogue, research, and collaboration to ensure that our history would be told with authenticity and dignity.
Today, many treasured objects from her family heritage, carefully preserved over decades, are part of this historic exhibit, helping tell the story of the Nakba through the lived experiences of Palestinian families.
This exhibit is an invitation to learn about Palestinian history, and to understand the human impact of displacement, loss, resilience, and the enduring hope carried from one generation to the next.
At Yafa Café, we have always believed that food is another way of telling that story.
Since opening our doors, we have shared Palestine not only through our recipes, but through our hospitality, our traditions, our embroidery, our music, and the conversations that happen around every table. Every dish carries a story, every recipe preserves a memory, and every gathering keeps our culture alive.
