It’s been a difficult week for the Town of Winnipeg Beach, and honestly, we weren’t sure whether to even write this. Politics can divide people quickly, and that’s not what we’ve tried to build at Breakwater.

But we do think sometimes it’s important to stand up and say something positive.

We want to thank Stan Potten for the work he’s put in as mayor over the last year. Stan took office within days of us taking possession of Breakwater, and since day one, we’ve both been trying to build something positive in Winnipeg Beach.

From the first week we opened our doors, Stan has supported Breakwater. He’s stopped in, checked in, and been genuinely encouraging from the beginning. We’ve appreciated that more than he probably knows.

Over the last year, we’ve watched Stan spend countless hours listening to people, having conversations at the coffee shop, showing up at events, volunteering, always driving around town and trying to move the town forward. You see it at the rec centre, you see it in the community, and you see it in the direction things were heading into this summer.

It’s unfortunate things have gone the way they have.

Like many people, we’re disappointed to see one-sided stories and negativity take over what should really be conversations about the future of Winnipeg Beach. We’ve tried very hard at Breakwater to stay positive and contribute something good to the town, and that’s exactly the direction we hope Winnipeg Beach continues moving in.

Come the end of July, Breakwater will be supporting Stan Potten.

More importantly, we encourage people to make sure they’re on the voters list, ask questions, have conversations, and exercise their right to vote.

From what we’ve seen personally, we believe Stan truly wants what’s best for Winnipeg Beach. We don’t see personal agendas. We see someone who wants the town to be better.

And at the end of the day, we think that’s what most of us want too.
