You think small businesses are easy to run? Oooof. Aside from producing the product you make, you have to also be a technician and trouble shooter.
This started as a roast day at 7 am on holiday Monday. After one roast, the loft collapsed (ie the air that floats the beans to convection cook them).
Easy peasy! I have a spare part on Hand for EVERY component of the roaster for occasions like this. Swapped out the loft motor and ready to rock and roll again.
Except... now I had no heat. WTH?! Get the meter out and talk to the manufacturer to figure out the resistance and voltage required at various points.
Checked the SSRs (solid state relays) and contractors and odd readings on the SSRs. Swapped all 3 with new ones. Same thing
Swapped the Norak contactor. No change. Swapped all the potentiometers . No change.
Lots of head scratching. And FINALLY with the two engineers from the factory we figured it out.
One entire day lost. 300 pounds of coffee not being roasted.
BUT: we are up and running and lots of time to get this week's orders done.
Proper planning for these events and investing in critical spare components at the start help mitigate this issue.
Now back to roasting.
Who said being a small business owner isn't fun?
When we hear people say our coffee is too expensive, two things come to mind 1. They are not our people. 2. We do EVERYTHING ourselves like all small businesses: source the best green, design our own bags and labels, source canadian bag and label manufacturers, roast the coffee, bag the coffee, deliver the coffee, design and keep the website up to date, sell the coffee at the cafes, retail stores and farmers markets among many other tasks.
We are passionate to our core for coffee and bringing you the very best each week - FRESH ROASTED EVERY WEEK.
Have a great week everyone!
