Today, we wear orange to remember the children who were taken from their families and communities and sent to residential schools, and to honour the Survivors whose stories continue to shape the journey toward truth and reconciliation.

Orange Shirt Day reminds us that these stories must be heard, remembered, and carried forward.

At Kekuli, we believe that sharing culture, listening to Indigenous voices, and keeping stories alive are part of building a better future together.

Orange Shirt Day began with one child’s story.

Phyllis Webstad’s experience of having her orange shirt taken away on her first day at residential school became a symbol of the many Indigenous children whose identities, cultures and connections were forcibly taken from them.

Today, September 30 is both Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada — a day to honour Survivors, remember those who never returned home, and learn from this history.

At Kekuli, we believe that sharing these stories matters.
