A little behind-the-scenes of running a farm stand ❤️
Running a farm stand is incredibly rewarding, but it’s also a lot more work (and expense!) than many people realize.
A lot of people see a loaf of bread, a pack of cookies, or a tray of cinnamon buns and only see the final price. What they don’t see is the cost of the ingredients that go into making everything from scratch.
🧈 Butter: $5–$6 per brick (and many recipes use a whole brick!)
🍫 Chocolate chips: $35 per bag
🌾 Flour: $25 per bag
🍫 Cocoa powder: $35 per bag
🧀 Shredded cheese: $18 per bag (which only makes about 3-4 loaves!) and a brick $17-$24 plus the added work of grating
📦 Packaging: 40¢–$1.50 per item
And that’s before factoring in the time it takes to make everything.
🍞 A single loaf of my herbs and cheese bread takes about 45 minutes
🍪 A batch of cookies can take 1.5+ hours.
🥮 Cinnamon buns often take 2+ hours from start to finish.
Then there’s the shopping, prep work, cleaning, dishes, labeling, packaging, setting up the stand, and everything else that happens behind the scenes.
I’m not sharing this to complain - it’s something I genuinely love doing❤️ I just wanted to give a little insight into why homemade baking costs what it does.
Every item at the stand is made from scratch, with quality ingredients, and a whole lot of care. 🫶
To everyone who supports my little farm stand, thank you. Your purchases helps make all the time, effort, and rising ingredient costs worthwhile, and I appreciate every single one of you. 🥹💕
