Maple French Toast and a tale of two regulars...

It's Wednesday and we're open!
It's been a long time since we've been open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and it feels good.
Yesterday was overwhelming, we sold everything we made and everyone who came in was so enthusiastic about being able to come on a Tuesday.

Maple French Toast....
Our classic vanilla cake donut already tastes like a pancake and its how this donut starts. Cory builds a custard based glaze for hand dipping these lovelies. He finishes it with a brown sugar based maple caramel. Each bite is delicious.

Sorry about the sideways picture, but I wanted to talk about these two pieces of cardboard that I keep close by me in the shop.

They are gifts from two people. Both of them were pretty upset with me when we first met.

The painting is from someone who was experiencing a moment out front of the shop over a year ago. A moment that, when I have, I get to close a door, in a home, in safety, without judgment. I have a place to lay softly and cry, I have food to eat and a partner to console and support. These moments that people are forced to experience in public happen often in front of our big windows on Yates Street.
I approached them and stood with them. I stood as they yelled at everyone who walked by. I asked them if they were okay. I asked them if they could use a cup of coffee. They looked me in the eye and gathered their things and left, leaving a few words spoken from their rage.

A few days later, I was walking home and saw them sitting. They looked at me and nodded. Our relationship went on this way for a few months. Eventually they spoke. We never shared our names, just pleasantries and nods... until one day they opened the door to the shop and came in. Cory told them, you open that door and come in when you need. We learned their name 2 weeks ago, when they offered it up and asked us for ours. Thats all I'm going to say about our interactions to protect their privacy and to keep their trust. They left me this painting, an offering, it came with a story and meaning. It means a lot. To me.

The other card board...who buys a lot of our donuts.

This is a quick reminder that we are open every day now until February 4th. We will be closed on Sunday, February 4th, then open again Monday, February 5th to the 14th.
Our current flavor list will run from now until February 3rd, and a new flavor set will run Feb 5th to 13th.
We will have a special set of flavors for Valentine's Day. We are planning to take a small break after February 14th.

To remind you, the current flavors are:

Cinnamon Bun
Cinnamon Sugar
Apple Cider
Rhubarb Crisp
Raspberry Coconut
Strawberry Earl Grey
Maple French Toast
Coffee Crisp

Chocolate Salted Caramel
Chocolate S'mores
Chocolate Birthday
Mayan Fudge

Now let me tell you about Rhubarb Crisp.
We start with our vanilla cake donut. Cory cooks down cut rhubarb with a little lemon, sea salt then takes that compote as the base for his delicious oat milk fudge glazes. In the oven, I bake the brown sugar crisp topping for him to finish this gorgeous flavor.
It's quickly become a favorite this last week.

I'm taking my time working through all the messages and comments we have received over the last few days. We've had a few people come in to meet us, have conversations, discuss the last couple of posts, and offer feedback and support.

I truly underestimated any of the overwhelming responses to these last 2 posts. To be clear, it has been immensely positive and supportive. I thank you for all of it.

About yesterday's post...
I've taken some time to think about what I posted and how I posted it.
My intention was to let you know that we were going to be opening an hour late and why. I do this social media thing in real time, and I like to write.
I. I. I.... I made all about me, and no matter my intentions, it came off as entitled, and I feel I further victimized people I actually claim I am compassionate about.
I offer my sincerest apologies.
Yes, I have had a very difficult couple of years. Personally and professionally. But I asked for it all.
Even this location.

As an entrepreneur, I am responsible for everything that happens here and my response to it. Lately, I am coming to terms with who I am, how I do things, what I hope to become as an owner, and learning from who I have been.

Yesterday, a few comments gave me the gift of feedback... which I don't always get in my isolation as an owner with no staff and a husband as a partner.
I also never ask for it... because I'm afraid of it.
That has to change, and it will.

So I'm checking my white facing, priveledged ass here. I'm taking stock of my efforts in my community. I'm reflecting on my own actions and recentering myself out of them.

I've often said, "I find myself having floated to the middle of a pond and wondered how I got there."
I get to these sticky, murky spots the way anyone does. One foot at a time, unfocused, ego first, cold, and wet with each inch forward.

There was a lot of love and support on that post, too. I'd like to think those who did, see me, and what I do, see my intentions and heart in this.

I'm looking forward to brighter days and leaning into all of this. Because I am able, supported, seen, and here.

Thank you to those in my inbox with your ideas for how we can move forward.

Mandy.

We need until 9am this morning.
We spent 30 minutes this morning asking a few folks to move along. They did so slowly and politely.

What was revealed as they shifted to the side was an actual pile of ash from a fire to keep warm, broken glass pipes, cans of butane and matches stuffed in the door jam and locks that had been lit and burned down to the ends. Garbage, spilled food, vomit, urine, spit and blood.

I don't have answers and the light solutions are wearing thin. The damage being done is more than just paint and attracting rodents.
It's defeating, dehumanizing, frustrating and after 2 years of it, I'm at a loss.

We are tired. We spend tens of thousands a month to keep this place going at the cost to ourselves, our well being, our future.

Depleted. We have some serious decisions to make.
