‘The Coiffure’, is an excellent example of Mary Cassatt’s ability to explore the inner lives of women in quiet, domestic settings.

Cassatt was born in 1844 in Philadelphia, though later settled in Paris where she became an important figure in the Impressionist art movement 🎨

After visiting an exhibition of Japanese art in 1890, Cassatt became inspired by motifs of women undertaking daily activities such as washing and styling their hair, which were common in Japanese woodblock prints.

She went on to create a set of ten aquatints, including this one, writing "This set was done with the intention of attempting an imitation of Japanese methods" 📝
