Behind-the-scenes with the Strobel boys at sea!

Last week, Skipper Otto co-founder and lead fisher Shaun Strobel headed out to the fishing grounds with sons Oliver and Lyndon, bringing in a bounty of beautiful wild sockeye salmon. Lyndon, with his Go-Pro in tow, captured some incredible footage of their day on the water and we couldn’t help but share a few of his clips!

The season is only getting started - more delicious BC salmon to come 🐟

Sometimes people say “I bet Skipper Otto is expensive”.

The truth? We don’t compete with the cheapest seafood on the market, because cheap fish usually comes at the cost of people and the planet.

Instead, we’ve built a seafood system that provides harvesters with fair pay for their catch, uses only small-scale sustainable fishing methods, and ensures 100% traceability and transparency.

And here’s the surprising part: when we compared our prices to similar premium seafood businesses, we found our seafood was often the same price or cheaper.

So no, we’re not selling discount fish. We’re building a better future for our fishing families, oceans, and the people who care about what’s on their plate. And we think that’s worth every bite!

Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we're thinking about the Indigenous fish harvesters who are on the water right now, harvesting salmon for their families, communities, and for the Skipper Otto community.

Long before commercial fisheries existed, Indigenous Peoples developed deep knowledge of these rivers, inlets, and coastal waters, building food systems that sustained communities for generations and continue to do so today.

We are grateful to work alongside Indigenous harvesters, whose skill, care, and connection to place continue to shape the future of seafood on this coast.

As we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day, we honour the cultures, knowledge, and leadership of Indigenous Peoples, and the enduring relationships they have with these lands and waters.

Every year on World Oceans Day, we’re reminded that the future of our oceans depends on the choices we make today. But real change requires more than awareness: it requires action.

That’s why we’re so excited to celebrate our partnership with UBC Food Services, a collaboration that’s helping to demonstrate what a better seafood system can actually look like in practice! Today, Sonia sits down with UBC’s Executive Chef and Culinary Director, Chef David Speight, to talk about this incredible relationship.

These Korean-inspired tuna rice bowls have been our current meal prep obsession!

Requiring only a few fresh ingredients, a can of our albacore tuna, and pantry staples that you likely already have on hand, our rice bowl comes together in under 10 minutes and is full of flavour. We find the spiciness of the kimchi perfectly complements the creaminess of the mayonnaise and avocado, with the cucumber providing that final hint of freshness.

This scallop vongole spaghetti recipe is proof that sometimes simple really is best!

Using just a few basic ingredients, this easy yet seemingly luxurious recipe tastes like something you might find on the menu of your favourite seafood restaurant. Traditionally made with clams, we’ve given this recipe a Skipper Otto twist by using our incredible pink and spiny swimming scallops instead. The frozen scallops steam in a heavenly mix of garlic, chilli and white wine, allowing the briny flavour of the scallops to infuse and create the perfect light sauce for the spaghetti.

Your classic fish tacos just got a makeover thanks to our drool-worthy smashed pike taco recipe!

Now, don’t get us wrong, we love a good fish taco. But now and then, we love to shake things up, and this recipe is just that! Inspired by the viral smashed taco trend, we’ve blended our Northern pike fillets with a few flavour-packed spices to create a smooth paste that easily spreads over your favourite tortillas. Once prepared, the tortillas are pan-fried fish-side down, then flipped and finished on the other side. You can then top your tacos with your favourite toppings, whether it’s a fresh, punchy slaw or a quick salsa.
