Jules Bistro

Jules Bistro A casual French bistro in Gastown, Vancouver, BC Still going? Finish with a vanilla bean crème brûlée. Highly recommended.

Emmanuel Joinville’s remarkable little spot in Gastown hits all the right notes, conjuring hearty, unpretentious French bistro fare in a room transported straight from Le Marais. Start with the sizeable terrine de campagne with grape chutney before moving to the palate-fondling beef tenderloin in a red wine sauce or the duck confit with white beans and shallot compote. Kronenbourg 1664 on tap and

a daily three-course table d’hôte (greens, steak or salmon with frites, and chocolate terrine) for $26 make this room as affordable as it is authentic.

NEWS! 🎉 COMING SOON!

Brunch lovers can bid bienvenue to a new dining experience that brings the celebrated aspects of French bistro culture and cuisine to West Van’s Ambleside neighbourhood when Mèreon opens its doors at 1479 Clyde Ave. in January 2024.

The brainchild of owner and North Shore resident Ophelia Arida, Meréon promises to immerse locals and visitors alike in the iconic café culture found throughout France in a 52-seat space that will be open for brunch 5 days a week, Wednesday to Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Merèon menu will marry time-honoured French recipes and classic techniques with West Coast ingredients delivered fresh daily to the culinary team in dishes like a trio of iconic Croque sandwiches (Monsieur, Madame, Forestière), Quiche du Jour, Eggs en Cocotte, French Onion Soup, Signature Socca, West Coast Niçoise Salad, Duck Confit Cassoulet, Steak Frites, and more. The menu was envisioned by Emmanuel Joinville, the chef/owner and driving force behind the beloved Gastown Bar à Vin Jules Bistro.

Ophelia took her inspiration for the name of the restaurant from ‘Mère’, the French language word for ‘mother’ and an honorary title bestowed upon female cooks in France and particularly the city of Lyon that dates to the 18th Century. The moniker is a nod to multiple women who helped Lyon stake its claim as the gastronomic centre of France, chief among them Mère Brazier, who is regarded as “the mother of modern French cooking.” The seeds for the new restaurant were sown long ago during Ophelia’s many travels to France, when she developed an abiding love affair with the culture, cuisine and the simple joy found by bringing people together to the table to share a drink, a hearty meal, and make lasting memories. “Those trips helped me develop my passion to host and showcase the sort of hospitality and home-spun cuisine for which French culture is so well known,” says Ophelia. “It’s a place that’s nostalgic, welcoming and evocative where guests can gather around the table and enjoy a little joie de vivre with friends, family and loved ones.”

For the past 16 years, Jules has been more than just a place to me; it’s been my home, a place full of memories and experiences. Reflecting on this journey, I can’t help but acknowledge all of you and Jules’ wonderful staff’s support.

As we stand at the threshold of change, it’s important to recognize that though this marks the end of an era, it does not signify the end itself. Rather, it’s a transition, a doorway to new beginnings and exciting adventures. The prospect of embarking on fresh endeavors fills me with excitement and anticipation.

I extend a heartfelt invitation to join me in celebrating the culmination of this chapter. With only two days remaining, the 31st will mark Jules’ final day—a moment to bid farewell to the echoes of laughter, the warmth of shared moments, and the unique charm that defined this wonderful place.

Let’s come together, raise our glasses, and collectively say goodbye to Jules. Thank you for making it a shared experience filled with gratitude for the past and enthusiasm for the future. Here’s to the memories we’ve created and to the adventures that await on the horizon. Cheers to Jules and the countless stories it holds.
