Many powwow dancers, like this joyful gentleman from the Alberta plains, wear intricate, handcrafted beadwork that takes years to make. This kind of powwow regalia embodies personal and cultural identity. It is a symbol of community, spirituality, and connection to ancestors.

Given the history of cultural prohibition, and many other tactics deployed to erase Indigenous cultures in Canada, it is more important than ever for non-Indigenous Canadians to accept the invitation to witness, honour, and celebrate along with Indigenous Peoples at powwows.

It was our pleasure to welcome students from SFU’s Beedie School of Business with a taste of modern Indigenous charcuterie at their recent mixer.

We loved being part of the gathering, sharing good food, and helping create a space for connection and conversation.

Here’s to a year of learning, growing, and making your mark.

The first portrait is a young man at the beginning of his education in Political Science at UBC.

The second is a reimagining of that same person in the 1800s. (actual photo, not AI - just a different Photoshop treatment)

The juxtaposition of traditional and modern ways is particularly striking at powwows. Regalia, ceremony, music and dance exist alongside smartphones, university degrees, contemporary fashion and the lives we are building today.

We are not choosing between being modern and being traditional.

We are our ancestors’ wildest dreams.

“Wow, everything went so smoothly.”

That’s one of our favourite things to hear from an event professional.

Because we know what “smooth” really means.

It means the catering arrived when it was supposed to.
The presentation looked great.
Dietary needs were accounted for.
Guests knew what to do.
Nobody had to track down the caterer.
And you didn’t have to add one more thing to your already very long list.

We’ve worked with a lot of event professionals over the years, and the really good ones have an incredible ability to absorb the chaos so everyone else can enjoy the experience.

Our job is to make that easier.

So much goodness! ✨💖

Nasturtiums are beautiful, edible, aromatic, floral, and just a little spicy.

Their flavour starts delicate and floral, then finishes with a bold, peppery bite that reminds us of arugula, radish, and watercress all at once.

We had the pleasure of featuring these gorgeous blooms on some of our boards this summer, adding a little colour, surprise, and seasonal flavour to the experience.

And now, we’re saying goodbye until next season.

That’s one of the things we love about working with seasonal ingredients. They’re here for a moment, and when they’re gone, we’re already looking forward to welcoming them back.

Here’s to the fleeting flavours that make summer memorable.

What is a “Deadly Auntie?”

It’s slang for an older woman who is fierce, funny, stylish, and fiercely protective.

She has a sharp wit, loves teasing, and uses laughter as a way to heal and bond. Her booming, unmistakable laugh can command a room. It is equal parts hilarious and intimidating.

She commands respect, keeps her community safe, and is not someone you want to mess with.

She embodies “auntie energy,” offering unconditional love, wisdom, and comfort wrapped in tough love
