Rueda, Located approximately 170 km northwest of Madrid, near the River Duero, D.O. Rueda is Spain’s leading white wine appellation and the country’s second best-selling wine region overall, after Rioja. Rueda’s winemaking history dates back to the 11th century, when King Alfonso VI granted land in the region to monasteries. By the 15th and 16th centuries, its wines had earned recognition as one of the “Vinos de la Corte” (Wines of the Court) enjoyed by the Castilian Kings.
Today, the appellation is home to 79 wineries, more than 1,580 vine growers, and an impressive 40% of its wineries have female winemakers. White wine consumption in Spain currently represents 29% of total wine consumption, and Rueda holds the leading market share at 42%.
