English:
Over thirty years ago my husband and I came to Canada looking for a place to work and build a good life for what were then our small children. It was with this goal in mind that in 1991 we opened the doors of Latin America Emporium in the heart of Kensington Market at 243 Augusta Ave. What we found here was so much more than what we asked for — a vibrant community where we got to learn, celebrate and enjoy the best out of the varied cultures that makeup the market. A community that let us become part of it and share the delicious food from our home country, El Salvador, a community that supported us in fulfilling our goal of finding work and allowed us to provide for our family and watch our children attend some of the best schools and universities in the area. We thought that in the last 29 years we had seen all the best this neighbourhood had to offer — we were wrong, because there was so much more.

Last weekend, in the late hours of Oct 17 we saw 29 years of work disappear in a matter of minutes. As we rushed to evacuate, we thought we had lost so much and were not sure what we would do. But over those horrible minutes that transpired we saw the real magic this city and this community have to offer:

Brave & professional first responders from Toronto Fire Service, Toronto Police Service and Toronto Ambulance Service ensured we were safe and ensured damage was contained. By the early hours of Sunday, a GoFundMe campaign was started by Leyla, with an incredible response from our family, friends, customers and neighbours — our community. We cannot begin to convey the gratitude we feel for the overwhelming response. Because of this generosity we were able to acquire personal items & replacement medications in those surreal early days after the fire. This will also enable us to provide some measure of assistance for our staff to help them transition to other employment while we are closed.

Over the days that followed we were able to return and continued to feel and receive the support from this community. There are no words in either Spanish or English we can use to convey our gratitude for this support.

We only hope that in the future when people learn of this tragedy they also learn of the magic of our community — where varied cultures come to work, differences are celebrated, and everyone comes together to support each other when it is most needed. This is the best of Kensington and the best of Canada.
