Did you know that the Swahili word for eat is 'kula'? Interestingly enough it also translates to mean community or tribe.

As Malkia Cuisine relaunches one of our new goals is to build a community where folks in the diaspora can participate in conversations about Kenyan culture and traditions. Sometimes, they may not be easy conversations, but we aim to create a brave space, so everyone feels comfortable learning, sharing and growing.

Mandazis are a sweet East African bread that puts donuts to shame. They originated on the Swahili Coast, but various countries know them by different names. In West Africa, you may hear them called Bofrot or Puff Puff; whereas in Jamaica they're known as Festival.

Despite the name (or shape), they are perfect for any time of the day. You can eat them freshly fried (our favourite), save them for a snack or dunk them right into your afternoon tea. They make the perfect companion for any meal.
