Yesterday we picked up flowers that had been ripped out and put them in vases.

Tonight, one of our staff picked up someone who’d made a bad choice—not by ignoring what happened, but by offering a little dignity after delivering a firm message.

After recognizing someone who admitted to the vandalism, Ash told him, respectfully but firmly, not to do that again.

Then he gave him two sandwiches.

Two simple acts.

One with flowers.

One with food.

Both a reminder that while we can’t always choose what happens to us, we can always choose how we respond.

Today, I’m especially proud to call Ash part of the Bay Village Coffee family.

Some days remind you that kindness is contagious.

After the flowers out front were damaged, our friends at Merla Mae surprised us with a whole bunch of ice cream just to brighten our day. 🍦❤️

We didn’t expect that at all, and it meant more than they probably know.

It’s a wonderful reminder that while a few people choose to leave a mess behind, so many more choose compassion, generosity, and kindness. Those are the people who truly define our community.

Thank you, Merla Mae, for turning a disappointing day into one we’ll remember for a much sweeter reason. ❤️

I thought this post was going to be about vandalism.
It isn’t.
Yes, someone threw our bike rack into the flower beds. They ripped plants out of the planters. They pounded on our door so hard that the sign fell off and scattered donations across the parking lot at Teen Challenge.

But that’s only half the story.

The other half is that the flowers they tore out are now on our tables, making people smile.

Maybe that’ the choice we all get to make.

We can’t always choose what happens to us.

We can choose what we do with it.

I just had to clean up a few flowers. No big deal.
Someone else clearly had a much worse night than I did.
I only wish putting lives back together was as easy as putting a bike rack back where it belongs.

Life can be tough sometimes. Choose kindness. Always.
