IT’S THE SHEER BOLDNESS OF IT…

Honestly, what are we supposed to do?

At 7:15 this morning, someone walked into Bay Village Coffee, went straight to the counter, took our staff’s tip jar and casually walked back out.

No running. No panic. No apparent concern about being caught. Just walked away.

And that’s what is so frustrating. There seems to be a growing boldness about this stuff — almost an expectation that you can walk into a business, steal something and simply carry on with your day.

We have cameras. We called the police. We made the report. But in that moment, what exactly are we supposed to do? Neither I nor my staff are going to get into a physical confrontation over a tip jar. You have no idea how that could escalate, and no amount of money is worth someone getting hurt.

So they walk away. And they seem to know they can.

We’ve been here eight years, and while this neighbourhood has certainly had its challenges, this has been by far the worst summer we’ve experienced. Theft, vandalism, disturbances — it has become exhausting.

I know we can’t be the only business feeling this.
