Seeding season is never over!

This field got an early spring graze, it was cut and baled in july and then we did some tillage to control some perennial weeds.

Now its time to get a cover crop in the ground to keep the soil in place over winter.

If we are lucky, we may get to graze it this fall or early in the spring. 🤠

Blessed with a little more rain yesterday!

First rain at the Green Beach since July 15. Things were getting a little dry so we'll take it.

HR and I had just moved the custom cows into the last cover crop paddock on this piece. They should have lasted 24 hours but we pulled them out after 3. We had enough rain to make the field pretty soft. Fortunately we still got a pretty good trample.

With this timely rain, we are more confident that we will be able to return to this field with our cows in late September or early October.

Cover crop grazing. 😎

Happy cows cycling some nutrients for us on the grain acres. We hope to get good regrowth out of this crop for tall grazing, as well as some over winter species to graze comr spring.

1 pass seeding, 3 crops. We hope. 🤠

Bull turn out day - breeding season has commenced!

We hope everyone has a fantastic Canada day and stays safe with all the recent rain.

We are wet at the Green Beach, but not near as much as some. After the last several years of drought we are very thankful for the moisture.

One more sign of summer at the Green Beach!

The meat birds are on pasture and grazing away. They have been out of the barn for just over a week and seem to have settled right into their new homes.

Couldn't have asked for better weather to get them settled in - not too hot, and we've dodged the major storms so far.

Feel like summer now!

Custom herd had arrived and are settled right in. We are moving through some stockpiled grass We didn't use with our own herd. This is allowing us to add a lot of soil Armour which will help catch and hold on to moisture.

Down to stragglers in our own herd as calving nears its end. Next up we'll be adding the heifers in with the pairs!

Mixing seed!

About half our cover crop acres we have been making our own mix. Lots of tweaking but I think we've settled on one that gives us the most flexibility as far as use. We may graze it in summer, bale it for winter feed, or both. It also allows us to use some of our own seed.

Mix includes: Oats, Forage Peas, Fall rye, Hairy Vetch, Buckwheat

With the fall rye & hairy vetch mixed in, we hope for strong regrowth after the first harvest that allows for fall grazing and/or early spring grazing the following year.

But most importantly the cows love it! 🤠🐮

Seeding is in full swing in our neck of the woods!

We are just getting started, had some nice rain recently but wouldn't say no to a little more.

We clean a fair bit of our own seed at the Green Beach. Here's a look at some of the contraptions and setups we've Come up with for cleaning flax, oats & peas. Definitely not fancy but it works!

One more taste of winter this weekend!

We were able to get the bulls out of the yard, which opened up the first paddock for the laying hens. But they sure weren't keen on coming out yesterday morning!

Hoping the next precipitation we get is rain... 🤞🤠🐔
