Update about Odin’s diagnosis and treatment:
Odin had his first appointment at the BC Cancer Clinic in Victoria this week to review the neuropathology results and discuss the next steps in his treatment. Unfortunately, the pathology report determined that the tumour is a grade 3, rather than the grade 2 that was initially believed after the biopsy.
While this news is understandably scary, the doctors have reassured Odin and the family that it is still treatable and manageable. Brain tumours can vary greatly from person to person, and each case is unique. There are also many encouraging examples of people doing very well long-term, and the medical team shared some hopeful stories of patients who have responded extremely well to treatment.
Odin will likely begin radiation therapy in about a month. The doctors are preparing for 33 radiation sessions over 7 weeks which will be followed by TMZ chemotherapy (a pill form of chemotherapy). The exact treatment plan will be finalized after his next scan and a few additional tests as his care team puts together the best possible approach.
The doctors also shared some positive news — Odin is in very good overall health, which should help him tolerate treatment well. At this point, they expect side effects may be relatively minimal, with fatigue being the most likely. The hope is that treatment will not significantly impact his overall quality of life.
The family continues to feel incredibly grateful for the support, love, and generosity that has surrounded Odin through all of this.
In Odin’s own words:
“I’m still feeling great, taking this all day by day and enjoying life as usual. Family, friends, passions, goals — so much to feel grateful for and appreciate even with all this insanity I’m going through.”
