“Panfish” isn’t a single species—it’s a casual term anglers use for small, shallow-water freshwater fish that are easy to catch and about the size of a frying pan 🐟. Most panfish belong to the sunfish family (Centrarchidae), but the term can include a few other small species too.

Common types of panfish

Bluegill – Probably the most iconic panfish; aggressive and easy to catch

Crappie (black & white) – Popular for their taste

Yellow perch – Often grouped with panfish, especially in northern areas

Pumpkinseed sunfish – Bright, colorful, and common in lakes

Redear sunfish – Also called “shellcracker”
