Origin of a name

We thought of calling our Saturday morning farmers' market pop-up take-out café Grindstone Café. We hesitated... I looked at the logo Peter Stephenson had created with some paint he had on hand, saw the colours of the Italian flag, wondered "what is 'grindstone' in Italian? It made me think of machine, which is la macchina, pronounced MA-kee-na, and both words are from Latin, machine, and ultimately Greek, maykanay. Coffee grinder is macinacaffè, and according to Pete, the grinder is of extreme importance in the making of a good espresso. Then I thought of the expression 'deus ex machina', a kind of miraculous or contrived solution to a problem, first applied to ancient Greek plays, where a god would appear from the clouds and resolve the chaos.
2020 has been quite the chaotic year, and it's not over yet! We need some god to emerge from a device or machine and set things straight, save us from our folly. Or maybe a god from our grinder...deus ex macina.

It made me think how I love the crazy mottos folks come up with to advertise towns: "look at us now", "iceberg capital" "Blueberry Capital" "Where you Belong" I especially love to make my own- "Have you tried our Gravy?" "What will we dig up next?" "See it before we tear it down/burn it down!" And let's not forget "What a beautiful spot, let's put a Gas Plant there"

I like to have at least one million dollar idea a day. This hasn't happened yet today, but I'm optimistic it will still happen.

It takes a lot of beans to make good coffee. It also takes a lot of people. It's labour day, so we are celebrating the folks who are our workers! All café Tintamarre employees (past and present, what the hell) get free drinks today. I'm on bar, so they get the day off too. (when working our people get free drinks to ensure the product tastes as good as possible)
