I’m not drawn to food that looks messy on a plate. But I know there are quite a few dishes that are really good despite the way they’re plated.

For instance this chicken shawarma plate from Basha Vancouver I only decided to order this after seeing the fresh ingredients in their food assembly like veggies, hummus, and freshly cooked seasoned rice. And then the chicken shawarma on the vertical broiler is sliced in thin pieces and cooked again on the flat grill making burnt edges that was so good!
The potatoes were also seasoned very well and had a slight crunch. It was a perfect plate!

I’m now excited to try the other meat options, beef, lamb even shrimp. I guess we shouldn’t judge the food by its plating 😉.

Miso marinated black cod with arugula side salad and roasted sesame dressing. Jasmine rice with Kyoto’s Kyo Rayu Furikake.

If you’ve got plans to go Japan 🇯🇵, make sure you get yourself some of this furikake. It’s basically chili oil rice seasoning. SOOO good with rice regardless if you’re having meat or fish, whatever it is, it’ll help elevate the entire dish.

Ground turkey with egg tofu

Sauté garlic, onions, chili, and green onion
Add in the ground turkey until brown
(Meat was marinated in light soy sauce, white pepper, sesame oil and oyster sauce for 15minutes)
Pour in the sauce and let boil:
Light and dark soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, oyster sauce and white pepper
Then add in some cornstarch slurry. Mix well.
And finally, add in the pre-pan fried, corn starch coated slices of egg tofu. Mix in with the sauce.

Surprised that the seaweed pork floss was light and fluffy (thank goodness!). And loved 🥰 the taro wrinkled skin milk pudding. It was the perfect chilled not-too-sweet dessert for the warm weather. I also got the cane sugar tea to wash ‘em all down.

Admittedly, I came here for the homemade egg tarts. Although I got there at 345 (they open at 3), they were already sold out. Staff said the line started at 245. Lesson learned, will try again next time.

MICHA 米茶食堂 has very affordable lunch and dinner sets. Today, I tried their chicken popcorn with egg fried rice and it was a really big portion, could not finish in one sitting. The chicken popcorn was not oily at all and the egg fried rice was super tasty you could eat it all on its own. I paired it with the in-season watermelon 🍉 juice which sort served as my dessert too.

Lots of other interesting dishes I’d like to try on another visit, the drinks alone are worth coming back for with this heat! 🥵

Had some really good, freshly made truffle flavored Rice rolls with pork slices. And some shrimp spring rolls for a crunchy contrast. Durian balls was the choice for a sweet ending. Have tried others’ rice rolls, but YIN JI CHANG FEN Richmond (Metro Vancouver) is still my top choice. They’re nearby, free parking, near transit, open as early as 8am and closes late at 10pm. The staff is really nice too 😊.

An hour wait for nothing but the best! .restaurant serves THE best beef luc lac and chicken wings, among others.

People lined up, even up to 1.5 hr wait, folks that came in the door were ready and willing. Even tourists that were surprised and weren’t sure they wanted to wait 1.5 hrs (loudly) figured, “hey if folks are lined up here waiting that long, it must really be that good.”

What makes their beef luc lac the best? The slices of beef were very tender and the sauce was nice and thick. And the wings? Crispy, garlicky with a touch of sweetness and yet, not oily at all. They also served pork bone soup, the kind our Asian parents made and we devoured as kids.

Have not seen their menu for a while, I never felt the need as I always had my go-to faves. But it seems they’ve reduced the options and concentrated on their best sellers (Great idea, actually💡)

Would really love to try the other dishes on their menu, if I could stop myself from ordering the same 🤣

Look 👀 at those layers!!!

Fresh pasta hits different! You could really taste and feel the difference. Paired with a very flavorful sauce and you’re good to go! So simple yet somehow elegant.

The lasagna is served on a limited basis every Mondays, and I hear they always sell out. Make sure you book ahead. Loved the meaty sauce and especially the crispy burnt edges of pasta sheets 🤤.

The fazzoletti with morel mushrooms, peas in light Parmesan cream was unexpectedly VERY good 👍. It looked so plain and unimpressive as soon as it landed, but never judge a book by its cover 🤣 it was luscious, perfect bite into the pasta and literally almost licked the plate clean.

We also tried their Suppli Cacio e Pepe. Which is a regional (Rome) version of the arancini. I actually like this better, the elongated shape allows for easy dining vs the round ones. I’ve not been to a lot of places with either, so I could not pass this up.

And finally dessert. And what’s an Italian dinner without tiramisu, right? Just don’t make the mistake of getting one each. The portion is huge!! Good enough for 2.

Loved this place! We’re now looking forward to try the other pasta dishes!! 🥰
