I’ve honestly been having a hard time putting this into words. When I made my last post, I knew it might mean something to some people, but I really wasn’t prepared for the response. The comments, private messages, stories, and memories have been a lot to take in, in the best possible way.
I’ve heard from long-time customers who have been coming to Jim’s for decades. I’ve heard from families who made us part of their Friday nights, birthdays, lunches, dinners, and little traditions. I’ve also heard from former employees who talked about their time here, their first jobs, the people they worked with, and the memories they still carry with them. Some messages made me laugh, some brought back things I hadn’t thought about in a long time, and some honestly made me just sit there for a minute and take it all in.
What really hit me is that while we were here doing the day-to-day work, making food, answering phones, cleaning tables, training staff, dealing with busy nights, and just trying to keep everything moving, Jim’s was becoming part of other people’s lives too. For some people, it was their first job. For some, it was where they came after school. For some, it was a family night, a birthday meal, a stop downtown, or dinner with parents, grandparents, friends, or people they may not get to sit across from anymore. That part really got to me.
When you are inside a business every day, you tend to see the work first. The stress, the bills, the repairs, the long hours, the problems that need solving, and all the little things nobody really sees. You don’t always step back and realize that the same place can mean something completely different to someone else. To them, it might be a memory. It might be a tradition. It might be a piece of growing up in Port Hope.
Reading all of those messages reminded me that Jim’s has never really just been ours. In a lot of ways, it has belonged to Port Hope too. I’m proud, but more than anything, I’m grateful. Thank you to everyone who took the time to comment, message, share a story, mention an old memory, or remind us that this little place has meant something to people over the years.
From our family, thank you.
Truly. ~Trevor
