You know how much we love to share on this page, so settle in. We have a story for you. ❤️

Yesterday, something very special happened.

It started with two strangers meeting in Port Hood.

This one is worth telling.

His name is Satellite.

Well, that’s his trail name anyway.

Satellite is 73 years old, a lawyer from Knoxville, Tennessee, and he is living with Stage 4 cancer.

Treatment isn’t an option for him. His doctor told him that if he wants to keep going, he needs to keep moving and carry weight to help strengthen his bones.

So that is exactly what he is doing.

He’s walking.

A LOT.

Satellite completed the Appalachian Trail. Then the Florida Trail. And now he is hiking the International Appalachian Trail, which has brought him all the way to Cape Breton and, yesterday, to Port Hood.

He spent the day walking our beaches before finding himself at the entrance to Port Hood, where he met a young man travelling by bicycle.

“Hey man, may I sit with you?”

Two strangers. Two very different journeys. Both travelling thousands of miles.

And just like that, a meaningful conversation began.

Satellite had somewhere he wanted to go.

The Admiral.

He uses an app where hikers leave information for one another along the trail, and someone before him had left a note about us: a great place to stop, good food, reasonable prices and amazing people.

We’re awfully glad they did. ❤️

The young man hadn’t planned on visiting us at all, but Satellite invited him.

“Come with me. I’ll buy you dinner and a beer.”

He agreed, but only for a quick stop. Fifteen minutes, he said, and then he’d be on his way.

Fifteen minutes turned into dinner, conversation and, before anyone knew it, more than two hours.

And somewhere along the way, a chance meeting between two strangers became something much bigger.

Elizabeth and Brianna were on shift and quickly found themselves drawn into the conversation, captivated by these two men and their stories. Somewhere along the way, it began to feel less like serving two travellers and more like a visit among new friends. ❤️

Before long, Satellite decided that if he had a trail name, they needed them too.

Brianna became Cocoon — finding her wings and discovering everything she’s capable of. ❤️

And Elizabeth became Delight.

If you know Elizabeth, you’ll understand. ❤️

They all talked.

Really talked.

About life. About the things we carry. About hurt and anger, kindness and forgiveness. About the things that happen to us and what we choose to do with them.

“It takes a lot of strength to accept kindness.”

“Are you bigger than your hate?”

Deep conversation. Profound honesty. Encouragement and inspiration.

There was something incredibly special about watching people who had been complete strangers only hours before speak to one another with the kind of honesty we sometimes struggle to find with people we’ve known our whole lives.

Satellite had a name for what was happening.

Trail Magic.

On a long journey, trail magic can be an unexpected act of kindness. Something you couldn’t have planned. A stranger appearing at exactly the right time.

But by the time those two hours were over, it was hard to tell who had given the trail magic and who had received it.

Maybe that was the point.

A young man had accepted the kindness of a stranger.

And Satellite received something in return that was harder to put into words.

He was emotional. Deeply grateful. He believed with everything in him that he was supposed to meet this young man that day — that somehow, their paths were meant to cross.

And then Cocoon and Delight became part of it too.

To Satellite, none of it felt accidental.

We can assure you, Satellite, the feeling was mutual.

And the rest of us who were fortunate enough to find ourselves in that conversation received something too.

A reminder to stop.

To listen.

To accept kindness when it’s offered.

To give it when we can.

And sometimes, to forget about whatever is supposed to happen next and just be where you are.

Satellite was happy for us to share his story.

There were also things shared from those bar stools that were meant to stay there. We promised him they would.

They will. ❤️

Because for a couple of hours yesterday, in a little place in Port Hood, a 73-year-old hiker from Tennessee, a young man travelling by bicycle, two women who came to work and left with trail names, and a few others lucky enough to wander into the conversation reminded one another just how good people can be — and what really matters in life.

Satellite isn’t a social media guy, so he may never see this post.

But wouldn’t it be something if this story travelled too?

If somewhere farther along the International Appalachian Trail, Satellite walks into another little pub or café, starts chatting with another stranger and someone says…

“Wait. Are you Satellite?”

Maybe they’ll pull out their phone and show him this.

And perhaps, while they’re at it, they’ll add a little more trail magic of their own.

We hope they do.

Because we think he’d be happy to see that we kept our word.

We told the story he trusted us to tell.

We kept the rest close to our hearts. ❤️

Safe travels, Satellite.

Cocoon, Delight and the rest of us won’t soon forget you.

Your trail magic will stay with us for a long, long time. ❤️
