Fall energy saving tip #3 – be kind to your heating system.

With cooler temperatures on the way, now is a good time to give your heating system some TLC.

Have your system serviced by a licensed contractor and replace your furnace filter.

Did you know - carbon monoxide has no colour, smell or taste, but can cause headache, nausea, dizziness, confusion and drowsiness can be signs of exposure.

As we enter the heating system, take some time and know the difference between your alarm’s emergency signal, low-battery chirp and end-of-life warning. Test the alarm monthly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

If your CO alarm does sound, get everyone outside immediately and call 911 from a safe location.

Treat an emergency CO alarm as an emergency: get everyone outside and call 911 from there.

There are two ways to shop for a furnace:

1. In September, with time to compare options and figure out what actually makes sense for your house.

2. On the coldest night of January, after the old one finally gives up.

Speaking from experience, we recommend option one

If your furnace is getting older, has needed a few repairs lately, or just doesn’t seem to heat the house like it used to, now is a good time to start the conversation.

We install Lennox and Napoleon furnaces and can help you compare efficiency levels, two-stage heating, variable-speed options and what’s actually worth paying for in your home.

Do you have an older natural-draft boiler?

If so, did you know that the TSSA requires a heating-season safety check for many residential natural-gas and propane natural-draft boilers?

The check includes a flue-gas CO reading and a visual inspection. If you’re unsure whether the requirement applies to your boiler, ask a licensed gas technician. Read more at https://www.vahoffman.com/natural-draft-boiler-safety-check.html

The heating-season requirement applies to a defined class of boilers—not every boiler in Ontario.

A furnace doesn’t have to be either OFF or FULL BLAST

Modern two-stage furnaces can spend most of the heating season running at a lower output, then step up when the weather actually calls for it. Pair that with a variable-speed blower and you can get more even temperatures, quieter operation, and better air circulation throughout the house.

If you’ve lived with rooms that are always too hot, too cold, or a furnace that seems to roar to life every 15 minutes, there may be a better way.

Thinking about replacing your furnace before winter? Give us a call and we can walk you through the options without overcomplicating it.

Take a look at your furnace filter before heating season gets busy.

If it’s dirty, replace it with the size and type recommended for your system. A clogged filter can restrict airflow, make the furnace work harder and leave some rooms less comfortable. Check it regularly and follow the manufacturer’s replacement schedule.

Not sure which filter belongs in your system? Give us a call: 905-834-3783.

A filter check takes minutes, but the correct direction, size and replacement interval matter.

Looks like another pretty nasty line of thunderstorms is headed through Niagara tonight.

With how much rain we’ve had lately, it’s worth taking a minute to check your sump pump, make sure the discharge is clear, and keep an eye on any spots that have taken on water before.

A few important reminders if you do run into trouble:
• Don’t enter into standing water if there’s any chance electrical equipment is involved.
• If a furnace, boiler, water heater or other equipment gets flooded, don’t try to restart it yourself.
• If you smell gas, get outside and call emergency services from somewhere safe.

We have plumbers and HVAC techs on call 24/7 for emergency situations. If you need us overnight, just call our regular number at 905-834-3783.

Hopefully this one passes without too much trouble.
