Many thanks to the Pictou County Chamber for highlighting women in business.
Women in Business: We’re proud to highlight Helen Buchan, the heart and hands behind Mrs. MacGregor’s Shortbreads.
For Helen, affectionately known as Mrs. MacGregor, baking is more than a craft. It’s a lifelong love shaped by precision, creativity, and a deep connection to family tradition. Before opening her bakery, Helen worked as a software instructor, a role that demanded meticulous attention to detail - something she now brings to every batch of shortbread she creates.
Helen’s shortbread story is rooted in a 200‑year‑old family recipe, lovingly passed down through generations of women on her maternal side.
From her great‑great‑grandmother Jean Gordon in the 1800s to her own mother, Helen grew up with the memory of warm shortbread served straight from the family tin: simple, buttery, tender, and impossible to resist. Those early moments became the foundation of what would one day become a beloved local business.
Mrs. MacGregor’s Shortbreads began in 2003, evolving from the tea room and restaurant Helen and her husband once operated in Pictou.
What started as a treat for restaurant guests soon grew into a full gourmet line of handcrafted shortbreads made with the finest all‑natural ingredients. Today, her bakery continues to delight customers with melt‑in‑your‑mouth flavours inspired by tradition, travel, and Helen’s love for history and tea rooms.
Beyond her skill as a baker, Helen is known for her warm, thoughtful spirit and the care she pours into her work. She finds joy in the life she shares with her husband of 38 years and their three furry companions - fueling the heart behind every batch.
Helen’s journey reminds us that passions can evolve, skills can transform, and it’s never too late to build something meaningful from the things you love most.
Thank you, Helen, for sharing your craft, your heritage, and your heart with our community. 💜
