Food from our childhood memories Ep1
Have you ever have a moment when some place you see or food you eat reminds you of your childhood?
I grew up in a small town close to the Cambodian border, most families cook simple meals and the best access to prepare food is in a morning and evening market that local brings and sell it in a plastic bag tide so tight with elastic that you best to cut it instead of trying to un do it.
Something like five spices
Ground beef with basil or prepared curries and stir fry ready for you to choose from.
If you want to be more fancy you could go to restaurant and sit down for a plate of meal cook right in front of you which we call this type of place
“Ar harn Tam Sang” it’s mean
“Food for Order” I remember it be more rice than the stir fry on it.
One restaurant that I feel very fancy to eat growing up was a small Chinese restaurant owned by local Thai-Chinese couple at the time I was 10 they must have been about 70 and up. I remember thinking to myself “wow! do they still have energy to cook? “
I found out later in life that the restaurant was the reason for them to live the long life they had. Many of the local including my great grandmother and I became part of their family, feel like going to your grandma from whatever side for dinner.
I miss my childhood.
When I move to Orleans over 10 years ago I noticed we have Chinese restaurant here in town right on St. Joseph blvd and we always turn and look when we drove by for work.
We found out that this place have been an original “Asian Cuisine”here in Orleans ( if I remember correctly) driving by you can easily missed it because the front of it look so simple and nothing fancy but I’m sure love to know the story of how and when they started the journey.
When Lola mentioned she wants to order some of the dishes to try out I was happy to support.
When we see the gentleman that delivered the food with the gentle look on his face it put me right back home.
Weird… right?
That’s when I realized, I have seen many Chinese restaurants, been to many places that served Chinese food but for some reason this small take out restaurant is the only one that reminds me of Home and brings back my childhood memories,
Right Here… in Orleans, Ontario Canada.
