Foster Motel is bringing their outlaw indie folk to Ottawa for the very first time! This will be an evening of outlaw indie folk and roots rock, with harmony-based songs, rich with story, character and melody.

Opening the evening will be a solo performance by legendary Toronto-based roots rocker John Borra.

About the Performers:

Foster Motel is the musical home base of Joel Stewart (The Future Hall of Famers) and Jane Gowan (The Real Shade, The Violet Archers).

Following a successful West Coast tour in May, 2026, Foster Motel continue to celebrate the 2026 release of Songs for Stadiums (Joel Stewart and The Future Hall of Famers).

Opening the evening will be a solo performance by legendary Toronto-based roots rocker John Borra. John has spent over 40 years as an authentic voice in the city’s alternative music scene. As a Toronto roots musician, he evolved from punk rock bands in the 80s to a critically acclaimed solo career blending punk energy with alt country, folk, and Americana storytelling.

Music Trivia is a free event but is first come first serve and space can fill up fast!
October 21st - 7pm start

Music trivia night featuring questions about current pop, hip hop, rnb, rock, and everything else! Test your knowledge of music in 2025 with questions like “who features on the remix version of Charli XCX’s ‘girl, so confusing’” and “what 2025 Kendrick Lamar song was first previewed in at the start of the music video to Not Like Us?” On top of answering questions, you’ll also have to name the artists after hearing a short clip of a song. There will be prizes for the top three teams!

About the Performers

Kent - Sonic Waves (Kent Leclair) is an Almonte based artist who delivers visual lyrics in a style somewhere between Bob Dylan and Lou Reed. Influences range from Big Thief, to Velvet Underground, to Sonic Youth. A debut album was released on June 14, 2026 titled "Lone Pine Lodge" produced at Ottawa's Little Bullhorn Studio's by Dave Draves and Kent - Sonic Waves is currently in the studio working on the follow up to that album.

Kyla is an Ottawa based musician who writes stories more than songs. Her Lyricism is as gentle as it is heartbreaking, making sure those who listen are taken on a journey. Inspired by artists like Adrianne Lenker, McGovern, and Julian Taylor, her songwriting breathes life into pain and beauty. Her music is sure to leave emotion lingering, even when her guitar is the only one speaking.

Tomorrow is the next installment of the Art & Mortality Death Cafe! October 11th, don't miss it!

A Death Cafe is an event where people, often strangers, are invited to enjoy tea, cake, and discuss death. The Death Cafe model was developed by Jon Underwood and Sue Barsky Reid, based on the ideas of Bernard Crettaz.

Art & Mortality Death Cafe is going to be run out of The Art House. While there is no set agenda, guests are encouraged to bring art supplies to work on projects or express their thoughts visually.
Pasalubong Death Care is running this event for free, and donations will be going towards covering venue costs. Our goal is to encourage people to connect with others, express their grief, and learn more about themselves, mortality, and their community. Death Cafes are not a replacement for grief or bereavement therapy. If a person is unwilling or unready to talk about death, this is not the event for them. This event is meant to be transient and confidential.

About the host:
Remilyn Felix Lydia Aiden Faundo Policarpio is a second generation Filipino diaspora transman. He attended the Iona School of the Arts, specialising in instrumental works for half of his time there before transferring to visual arts. He moved to Ottawa in 2015 to study philosophy, stopping short due to mental illness but continuing his work as an educator and artist. Felix seeks to spread the message of Death Positivity, and what it means to him as a q***r person of colour born to immigrant parents. His article, “Over The Grave and Back Again”, is published in Magdaragat: An Anthology of Filipino-Canadian Writing. He completed his Death Doula education with Blackbird Medicines, an Indigenous-owned and led organization. His Death Doula Service, Pasalubong Death Care, began in 2025. High Diving Act is a 4-piece band (guitar, sax, bass, drums) playing a mixture of instrumental boogaloo jazz and bluesy vocal numbers with the GROOVE being the connecting thread. They play originals and covers of artists as diverse as Paul Simon, Grant Green, The Band, Roy Hargrove and The Jackson 5.

About the Band:

High Diving Act is John Yemensky (guitar/vocals), Sarah Ramsay (saxophone), Ken Kanwisher (bass) and Allyson Rogers (drums). Yemensky and Kanwisher, both esteemed educators and composers/songwriters, have been on the Ottawa scene for decades and been recognized in The Ottawa Citizen, The Ottawa Sun, and numerous local publications for their highly skilled musicianship and abilities as both leader and sideman in bands of virtually every genre. Ramsay and Rogers, though significantly younger, have amassed incredible credentials both academically in music, and in the Ottawa live music community. Ramsay, a fairly recent grad of the Humber Jazz Program, is an in-demand woodwind player whose talents as composer/arranger/band leader/improvisor have attracted the attention of all the most respected musicians in Ottawa as witnessed by their eagerness to participate in projects of her creation. Rogers, Ph.D., is an authority on virtually every aspect of Canadian music and, of course, percussion. Together, they can entertain just about anyone due simply to their energy and ability to keep toes tapping, not to mention their captivating original material and ability to interpret covers which uniquely unlock their groove potential.

About the artist:
Francois le Roux, aka the HA!Man. is a 1966 Johannesburg-born son of a church minister and music teacher. His musical gift was recognized at age three when his first improvised piano pieces took shape. He studied cello and piano throughout his school years and appeared as a young soloist with orchestras, and his improvisation skills were honed as an appointed church organist since age 10. During the dying years of Apartheid he went through a spiritual crisis that eventually took him on a career path of spontaneous music making, also expanding into spontaneous dancing, writing and visual art. Life Drawing on October 13th is Back!

We posted a story yesterday saying that our weekly Life Drawing classes next week were going to be cancelled... but we've had a schedule change which means LIFE DRAWING IS BACK!

Join host and teacher Shawn Hunsdale to learn about drawing the human form.

Shawn invites a different model week to week, with a range of shorter and longer poses (n**e). Which means every week offers a new drawing opportunity!

Participants of all skill levels are welcome! Bring your own supplies. Please note that small and medium formats work best in our space. Tables and chairs are available.
