June 25th is the International Day of the Seafarer. It is a day when the world celebrates seafarers and their role in our lives and the economies of all nations. It is an easy date to remember as it is exactly 6 months after and 6 months before Christmas. At Lighthouse Harbour Ministries Vancouver, we are looking forward to celebrating this day and have special events planned at our centres as well as gift bags prepared to give as presents (thank you, Willingdon Church Mission Circle!).

To our seafaring friends: On your special day, we especially recognize that you sacrifice so much for your family so they can have a better life… and we are also blessed to have so many comforts that we enjoy all because of what you do.

Almost all of us have no idea what kinds of sacrifices you make or what you go through; however, there is someone who knows exactly what it is like to leave home and give up your life for the benefit of others, even if they don’t acknowledge what you have done or care. Jesus knows how seafarers feel, for He left His home in heaven to come to earth and sacrifice Himself, giving us the opportunity to receive forgiveness of sins and be brought into a relationship with Almighty God. The people of His day also rejected Him and did not understand Him, but He still came.

“He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.” (John 1:10-13)

To our seafarer friends… THANK YOU for all you do!!! And remember, Jesus knows firsthand what you go through. We encourage you to take your burdens to Jesus, for He understands and cares for you.

We are finalizing things for our Spring Breakfast on April 25th. Theme is "Sowing the Seed" and the programs have just been finished. A big "Thank You" to West Coast Seeds for donating a variety of seed packets for our event!❤️

Easter is just over one week away. The Easter celebration has its roots in the Jewish festival called Passover. This festival is a celebration of their deliverance from slavery in Egypt and their birth as a nation. God commanded Moses to instruct the people to do certain things, to remember this significant event, and to teach its meaning to the next generation. The account of this is given in the Bible in the book of Exodus 12:21-27:

Then Moses called all the elders of Israel together and said to them, “Go, pick out a lamb or young goat for each of your families, and slaughter the Passover animal. Drain the blood into a basin. Then take a bundle of hyssop branches and dip it into the blood. Brush the hyssop across the top and sides of the doorframes of your houses. And no one may go out through the door until morning. For the LORD will pass through the land to strike down the Egyptians. But when he sees the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe, the LORD will pass over your home. He will not permit his death angel to enter your house and strike you down.

“Remember, these instructions are a permanent law that you and your descendants must observe forever. When you enter the land the LORD has promised to give you, you will continue to observe this ceremony. Then your children will ask, ‘What does this ceremony mean?’ And you will reply, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt. And though he struck the Egyptians, he spared our families.’” When Moses had finished speaking, all the people bowed down to the ground and worshiped. (Exodus 12:21-27)

God was specific in His instructions. The reason for the detail was that the lamb or goat was a picture of a future event, when Jesus would give His life to rescue humanity from our slavery to sin. The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 5:7 that “Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us.”

Just as the Israelites were safe when they stayed in the house with the blood on the door, so we experience God’s forgiveness and His passing over us, and He does not judge us when we remain in Jesus. Our relationship with Jesus and His sacrifice is the means by which God passes over our sins. Well over 1,000 years before Jesus, God gave a picture of a coming Saviour to rescue all of humanity.

A Filipino crew asked how to get a Christmas tree for their ship so they could create some Christmas atmosphere while they are away from home. Lots of excitement, smiles and singing after we brought the tree onboard. With all the rain in Vancouver we are hoping for more opportunities to visit and speak with the crew as well as God willing a chance to celebrate the birth of our Saviour on Christmas Day.
