How the ATM Industry is Reacting to the Canadian Economy:

Due to digitization and globalization in the past 2 decades, the ATM industry seems to be truly struggling. For instance, Statista reported that the number of ATM cash withdrawals at bank-owned ABMs had been declining from 445.4 million to 266.6 million from 2017 to 2021.

Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has further deaccelerated the usage of cash in the country due to it being a conduit for spreading the virus.

However, besides all these obstacles that ‘cash’ is facing at the moment, my opinion is that it is still a viable option, and I will explain to you why.

It’s for the following reasons:
1) It’s your best option against identity fraud, cash cannot be tracked and has no personal information to give
2) Everyone, everywhere, accepts it. Try finding a business with a ‘we do not accept cash’ sign, it is much rarer than one which does not accept electronic payments
3) You avoid additional fees such as annual, late, foreign transaction and, balance transfer fees
4) Paying with cash also prevents you from coming more into debt than credit cards
5) No accrued interest when dealing with cash payments

Therefore, using cash is still a viable payment option in 2023.
