EQUI-T: Taxable or not ?
Some of you have asked us whether or not or new EQUI-T Green Iced Tea was taxable or not. According to the document on beverages issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (GST/HST Info Sheet GI-036 http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/gi/gi-036/gi-036-e.html), the EQUI-T is considered a single serving non-carbonated beverage (since it is under 600 ml) and is therefore taxable. It is, however, zero-rated when “sold in multiples of single servings pre-packaged by the manufacturer or producer, or when the container in which the beverage is sold contains a quantity exceeding a single serving”.
As a result, EQUITA does not add taxes to its 24 units box of EQUI-T but those units are taxable if they are sold individually.

Single serving = taxable

Multiples of single servings pre-packaged = not taxable

This info sheet describes how the GST/HST applies to beverages.

Made with our famous green tea from Sri Lanka, this Fair Trade certified and Organic iced tea is sweetened with an apple juice concentrate. The combination of Green Tea and apple is surprisingly refreshing and thirst quenching.
