How This Happened...

I grew up on the South Shore of Lunenburg County and, with a couple of moves in between, found myself back here living in Cherry Hill in my first very own home.

The house was a blank canvas( no pun intended, haha) for all of the projects I always wanted to do. When I started looking for a floor covering for my dining room I couldn’t find exactly what I was picturing. Then one day, there it was...a floorcloth! It fitted my concept perfectly.

I grew up hearing stories from my parents about the creativity of their mothers. They told me how old sails or bags were painted and used to cover wood floors. My mother recounted to me a story about when her mother painted one for their kitchen floor. It was so large that the family had to eat their meals in the dining room until it was finished! In the 1930’s, that was a big deal to a little girl!

So I found a pattern I liked, and started the process. I know now that it was probably too large an undertaking for my first floorcloth. Approximately 7x11 feet, and a much more intricate pattern than I expected, it took several weeks of 12 hour days to complete. Yet, I loved doing it! I was completely consumed and , not long after, made a small mat for a friend depicting her farm. With so many ideas in my head, I kept making floorcloths and , well, here it goes!

A quick note about the name of my business. My Dad is an indescribable influence in my life. He passed away last fall. On his funeral paper, my Mother had written “ A Proud Fisherman” and he surely was that. So defining myself as a fisherman’s daughter comes easily. I think he would like that a lot!

The decision to turn my floorcloth creations into a business was actually an easy one! I value traditional art forms,especially local ones, and for a while it seemed so many would fall by the wayside. As a girl, I watched my Mother and Grandmother knit, embroider, quilt and even rug hook. It is gratifying to see a resurrgence in all of these. I also need an outlet for my creative juices and my house can only contain so much photography, driftwood, beach glass and the like!

The process is very labour intensive. I try to find recycled materials, paint especially, but also canvas. I usually find dropcloths cost effective. I use a lightweight canvas because it is easier to work with. The designs are all original and some are taken from my own photography. My themes are most often ocean based. My work is also all hand done, and free form as well. In fact, the shells are done from the actual things I picked up on local beaches. I don’t like stencils, or rulers for that matter and eyeball more than I should! Obviously, there are some designs that have to be more precise and I do use a straightedge for those!

So first I wash, dry, cut, hem and lightly iron the canvas. I then use a quality primer and cover the bare canvas. Then a light sanding, a basecoat of whatever colour I want for the specific piece, another light sanding and then the picture or design. It is then coated with three coats of water-based varethane, with a light sanding in between each coat. One of my favourite things about these is that they are imperfect. The canvas stretches and shrinks and moves a lot in the process and the finished piece is never quite square. They are also so durable. I have the cat one in front of my kitchen sink and i wash it off almost every day. I use soapy dish water, or even stronger cleaning products. Depending on where they are placed they may need a skid pad underneath but I don’t use any and mine are fine.
