Thank you to everyone who made Canada’s birthday such a memorable celebration. 🎉

A huge thank you to the Canada Day Medicine Hat organizers for putting together an outstanding event. From the entertainment to the incredible lineup of performers, every show celebrated the rich diversity that makes Canada so special. It was a beautiful reflection of our nation’s heritage, a true melting pot of cultures, traditions, and stories! 🙌

What a privilege it is to celebrate the legacy we share as Canadians, together as one community.

We’re so grateful that Orchid Tap Bar was able to be part of this amazing two-day celebration. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared a drink, encouraged us, and became part of our story.

As Canada Day approaches and as we prepare to launch Orchid Tap Bar, I’ve been reflecting on the journey that brought us here.

Our family immigrated to Canada in 1980 after my parents fled communist Laos in search of freedom and a better future for their children. We first settled in Lethbridge, where my father worked at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Shortly after arriving, he became gravely ill. Both of his kidneys were failing, and after months on dialysis, he received a donor match and underwent a successful kidney transplant. Looking back, it truly was a miracle.

Because of his illness and recovery, our family eventually settled in Calgary. My parents were still learning English and navigating Canadian culture, but through hard work and perseverance, they found employment at Glencoe Golf & Country Club, where they spent many, many years serving members and their families from the kitchen.

We lived in government housing in Spruce Cliff at #2 Plum Tree Place SW. There were many immigrant families there, and though we had very little, we had everything we needed.

Endless summers. Bikes. Friends. Freedom.

Then came the summer of 1985.

A neighbourhood boy started selling lemonade to golfers over the fence at S**ganappi Golf Course. He’d also collect lost golf balls and sell them back the next day. Looking back, he sparked something in us.
So my older sister and I started our own lemonade stand.

Fifty cents a cup was the going rate. 🍋
Those summers were some of the best memories of our childhood.

Looking back, golf has always connected our family. From my parents working at Glencoe, to our lemonade stand at S**ganappi, and now through Grace on the Greens and the many rounds we’ve enjoyed together as a family.

Forty years later, that little lemonade stand has grown into Orchid Tap Bar.

Thank you to my parents for their sacrifices.
Thank you to Canada.

And thank you to all those golfers who unknowingly made our very first venture so memorable and fun.
Some dreams take 40 years to come full circle. 🍋🇨🇦⛳❤️

Thank you to all our guests who came out to celebrate Father’s Day with us! 💞 It was also a bittersweet day, as it marked Ewan’s last shift with us. Though his time with our team was short, he truly made an impact.

Hardworking, efficient, and an absolute joy to work with, Ewan quickly became a favourite among both our team and our guests. He could probably sell ice to an Alaskan, he’s just that charming. 😄 Our guests often complimented him on his friendly, attentive service… and yes, the ladies certainly noticed those dimples too! 😂 And of course, we have to give him extra credit for being a Flames fan 🔥

One thing that touched us most was hearing Ewan say that this job was more than just a job to him. He genuinely loved coming to work and looked forward to every shift. He enjoyed meeting and serving our guests, and especially the conversations and connections he made with people. In his own words, it never really felt like work, it simply became part of his daily routine. The paycheque was just a bonus. ❤️

This summer, Ewan is heading to Eagles Nest Ranch to serve as a Camp Counsellor, a role that carries the incredible responsibility of mentoring and encouraging young people. We know he will be amazing, because whatever he does, he does wholeheartedly and for the glory of God.

Thank you, Ewan, for the time, laughter, and dedication you’ve shared with our team and our guests. It has been an awesome ride, and we are grateful to have been part of your journey.

We wish you all the best this summer and beyond, and we look forward to seeing where God leads you next. 🩵🙌🙏

🍜 Restaurant Kids: A Different Kind of Normal

When the power went out in 2016, most parents were saying:�“Let’s play a board game.”

Meanwhile, restaurant parents were saying:�“Okay kids, today we’re learning how to use the rotary phone.” ☎️😂

That’s the kind of childhood you get when you grow up in a family restaurant.

From answering phones and rolling cutlery to jumping in wherever help was needed, our kids learned skills most children never even saw. To them, it was all completely normal.

Looking back now, we can’t help but laugh at some of the things they thought every kid experienced! 😆

Those who know our family and have watched our kiddos grow up in the restaurant know how special it is to see them helping build this new family venture together.
