From our very first introduction to Maya…through one of the most heartfelt and beautiful resumes we’ve ever received, we had a feeling she was someone special. Kind, compassionate, quietly determined…a rare find.
570 days ago, on February 2, 2025, Maya joined our little cafe team as a high school student. Every Saturday and Sunday, you could find her in the dish pit, making her way through the never-ending story that is weekend brunch dishes, and somehow, always with a smile on her face.
Then one day she asked, “Can I learn the art of being a barista?”
Our answer? YES. Please.
Because here’s the thing about Maya: she really is an artist.
And she approached the espresso machine exactly like one. She watched videos. She practised. She studied. She steamed. She poured, adjusted, tried again, and before we knew it, she was absolutely crushing the La Marzocco, even with drink tickets a dozen deep.
Apparently, even our front-of-house labels weren’t safe. In Maya’s hands, anything could become a canvas.
Over those 570 days, we’ve watched a high school student who started out washing dishes grow into an incredibly capable barista and an even more remarkable young woman.
Maya has been dedicated, hardworking, creative, kind, and an absolute joy to have as part of our cafe family.
So it’s with that strange mixture of sadness and enormous pride that we watch her head off to begin her next adventure at the University of Calgary.
We already know she’s going to crush it.
And Maya, just so we’re clear: leaving for university does not get you out of coming back to visit us.
We’ll be waiting for that smiling face. ❤️
