We have seen so many amazing local businesses close their doors recently. Its the sad reality of todays economy. When it comes to supporting your community and stimulating the local economy, shopping local is paramount.
Local businesses often offer a more personalized and customer focused experience compared to larger chains or online retailers. Whether it's getting to know the owner or staff on a first name basis or receiving customized recommendations based on your individual needs, shopping local allows for a level of service that simply cannot be replicated elsewhere.
Next time you need to make a purchase, consider the benefits of shopping local. Whether its shopping with us at Sky & Sparrow, grabbing a coffee from the Poolhouse or Station, or buying your veggies at one of the many local greenhouses, every dollar you spend can make a difference in the community.
Supporting local doesn't just mean spending money! When you see your local businesses post on social media...SHARE that post for them. Who knows, maybe when you share it someone on your friends will see it and visit that local shop.

It saddens me deeply to have to make this post.

Unfortunately due to the lack of visitors to the downtown core, Moose & Squirrel is no longer able to operate at full capacity. As a seasonal business, we rely on increased foot traffic and visitors to the city during the summer months. With a more than 50% decline in visitors this season, it has made it impossible to continue full time operations. 

We will be closed this week, as we typically close during stampede. But will be taking the time to re-group and devise a schedule for the remainder of the season. I will continue to post events as they occur. 

I am incredibly proud of what we built. The unique space we created has contributed to the beautiful Historic downtown and will remain.

I will continue my quest to encourage the city to devise a plan to promote tourism. It is absolutely inexcusable to let tens of thousands of visitors pass through on the Highway 1 corridor without even trying to invoke enough curiosity that could encourage them to stop. Especially from those that never intended on visiting the city, but simply planned to pass through.

It is a simple task and not cost prohibitive. It just requires some planning and commitment. The downtown can not thrive without it.

In the meantime, please continue to support our friends and neighbours in the downtown core. They need your support now more than ever.

Special thanks to Adrian St. Onge of CHAT TV Medicine Hat for taking the time to speak with me and Sarah from 7 Rivers Trading Co. yesterday about the impact construction has had on the downtown businesses.

The construction is critical, but with a more than 50% decline in traffic/visitors to the downtown core, the businesses are struggling.

I will continue my quest to have the signage along the Highway 1 corridor re-evaluated. Updating the language to include "Historic" and "Murals" to tourism signage will have a significant impact on driving visitors to the area.

As well, location of tourism signage for the Downtown core needs to be reviewed.

Let's see if we can make it happen.
