LOBSTERS EAT STARFISH, AND THAT’S NOT EVEN THE STRANGEST PART 🦞

Most people picture a lobster crawling along the Atlantic bottom, waiting for scraps of dead fish to float past. That picture is completely wrong.

Lobsters are nighttime hunters, and one of the most surprising things on their menu is starfish. Yes, the same colourful sea stars people pick up along the shoreline can become supper for one of the Atlantic’s most famous creatures. Lobsters also hunt crabs, clams, mussels, sea urchins, worms and small fish. If food gets scarce enough, they may even eat another lobster.

But here is where it gets truly strange.

A lobster can taste food with sensors on its walking legs. It uses one claw to crush and the other to tear, then passes the meal into a stomach containing three hard grinding surfaces known as a gastric mill. In other words, a lobster practically tastes with its feet and chews with teeth inside its stomach.

For years, people thought lobsters were nothing more than scavengers cleaning up whatever died on the ocean floor. Scientists now know they are active, opportunistic predators cruising the darkness in a suit of armour.

It turns out one of Atlantic Canada’s favourite meals has a pretty wild favourite meal of its own.

Did you know lobsters ate starfish, or did you think they survived entirely on scraps and bait?
