Good day folks! Pardon the interruption in posting,I've been busy in the shop working in some great projects!
Pictured here is an herb chopper that was commissioned by my wife's cousin. I forged the blade from a piece of old truck leaf spring (roughly equivalent to 5160, a spring steel). After that, I did the rough grinding and established the profile and thickness of the blade.
In order to produce an edge that cuts well but also stays sharp through use, heat treating of the blade is necessary. I quenched the blade (only about 1 1/2" up the blade) in oil to harden it. In order to tradesomeof the hardness (and brittleness) I put into the blade, the blade was tempered I a toaster oven at 400F for 2 hours. This produces a nice straw gold oxide on the blade, though that ultimately gets removed in final grinding.
To bring the blade to completion, I did the final shaping and grinding of the blade, working my way up the grits from 36 to finish at 220. A final sharpening on my Edge Pro (shoutout to ) and stropping was done to establish the cutting edge, and boy is it sharp! Cuts through paper like it isn't even there πͺπ
Lots of fun making this piece, I'm sure my clients will love it :)
