Great work by Young Agrarians!

Last month, Young Agrarians Policy Manager, Ayla Fenton, and Executive Director, Alex Pulwicki, travelled to Halifax for the federal-provincial-territorial agriculture ministers summit, where governments were negotiating priorities for the next Agricultural Policy Framework (2028–2032). We were there to advocate for stronger support for new farmers and greater investment in local food systems.

We're pleased that the resulting Halifax Statement reflects both priorities. The Statement makes a commitment to strengthen support for new entrants and succession planning, and recognizes the need to invest in local and domestic market development, which have not been included in previous frameworks. Read our full press release for more information, and stay tuned as we keep pushing to make sure the resulting programs and funding deliver effectively on these commitments 👉 https://youngagrarians.org/young-agrarians-halifax-statement/

Looking ahead to this fall and winter, Young Agrarians will be building a government relations strategy focused on connecting new, young, and equity-deserving farmers directly with the policymakers and program designers shaping the next policy framework.

We believe it's essential that government hears directly from farmers about the barriers and challenges. We are looking for farmers to participate in government relations training and lobby days. If you're interested in learning more or getting involved, reach out to Ayla at [email protected].

Event rescheduled!

Join us Thursday, September 11 from 6-8pm at the Indigenous Food Sovereignty Garden for a community potluck & conversation about our regional food system. This is the final event in our summer "Digging In" series!

About the Digging In series:
The Food Policy Council for KFL&A is excited to be hosting a monthly summer potluck series we are calling "Digging In: Community Food Conversations". As we embark on our project to develop a regional food strategy, we are excited to connect with the community and create space for dialogue and co-creation. These summer gatherings are casual, fun spaces to share good food, learn about some local food projects, and begin collectively thinking about how we can build a local food system that works better for everyone in our community. Following this summer event series, we will host more structured food strategy dialogue sessions in October and November, to inform the development of a Food Strategy report for the KFL&A region.

Thursday, Sept 11 event details:
We will be gathering Sept 11 from 6-8pm at the Hwy 15 Indigenous Food Sovereignty Garden (1467 Hwy 15, Kingston).

The Indigenous Food Sovereignty Garden is a project of the All Our Relations Land Trust (AORLT). AORLT is a charitable organization led by Indigenous Peoples who are committed to supporting and restoring diverse ecosystems within the greater Kingston area and safeguarding the life of the land for the benefit of past, present, and future generations. This garden is a concrete project advancing the food sovereignty of the urban Indigenous community, and we will have a chance to hear from some of the organizers about their important work.

We will be providing food, and you are welcome to bring a dish to share if you would like to - or bring a friend! There is no obligation to bring anything for the potluck. All are welcome, feel free to share this invitation with anyone who might be interested.

RSVP:
Please RSVP by responding to [email protected] so we know how much food to bring.

You're invited! Join us Thursday, June 26 at 6pm for our next community potluck & conversation about our regional food system.

The Food Policy Council for KFL&A is excited to be hosting a monthly summer potluck series we are calling "Digging In: Community Food Conversations". These potlucks are held on the last Thursday evening of each month from May through August.

Our next potluck is next Thursday, June 26 from 6-8pm at Oak Street Community Garden. We hope you can join us! The garden has some seating, but if you are able to bring your own lawn chair please do so.

We will be providing food, and you are welcome to bring a dish to share if you would like to - or bring a friend! There is no obligation to bring anything for the potluck. All are welcome, feel free to share this invitation with anyone who might be interested.
