The Living Grocery Store

The Living Grocery Store Living a future where local fresh food & seed is abundant. Food scarcity is an illusion What is The Living Grocery Store? How satisfying is that? Simple eh?

Have you ever needed tomato’s for your salad, walked outside and plucked a tomato off the vine? This is the concept behind The Living Grocery Store. We grew tomato’s in our greenhouse this year and a vision of walking into a neighborhood grocery store (aka neighborhood greenhouse) and harvesting your food, from the vine and soil. There is a beautiful connection that is created when we grow and har

vest our own food. Appreciation, a sense of wonder…we have forgotten and we are in a time of remembering. We are living beings, and so is our food.

Conversations with Creeping Bellflower

“Come close, pull me with your bare hands, slow your life down, quiet your mind and visit often. I have much to share, it’s been a while since we talked.”

This year the ‘dreaded weed’ decided to move into the yard. Many of you have noticed its over the top this year. I've witnessed it as being similar to a spider or a mouse in that has the power to evoke so much attention to it. Typically in the form of fear and loathing, but it’s a plant you notice right? Humans shriek and yearn to eradicate it, focusing all this energy and frequency towards it. Then wrap their arms around the precious chosen plants and do everything to protect them. I get it.

And, It is in these precious moments, that I love to talk to plants, especially the intrusive ones, the ones that ‘don’t belong’. And with this particular one, I asked oh so lovingly.

What the F are you doing here?

After asking, I spend time observing my new roommate. Where is it growing, how is it growing, where are the roots, how can I reuse you? how does it taste (lol), does my body like you, what can I learn? These are questions I truly ask them, yup! Everyone reading this talks to plants, consciously or unconsciously your talking to plants. They hear you, they know and understand your intentions …and they yearn to communicate with you too. Slow down, you’ll hear them.

So, It was during this communion of observation that I noticed areas of sparce leaves. As I pluck them I’m only able to grab one little leaf at a time. It like they are connected to nothingness…so that seems fruitless to focus any energy on these. They are but a distraction.

Then I observe the ‘mother’. She’s different and has strength to her, supported by a strong stem she has harnessed energy and wrapped herself with larger heavier leaves in a pleasing pattern and I can tell she has one goal in mind…get as tall as possible to sow her seeds. Well hello. As I pull this mother, I notice this is where all the roots are. Ah-ha. Bingo. So I now focus my calm energy on these mothers and slowly coax the roots out of the ground. There is pleasure in getting clean roots, I can feel the difference between a hasty tug and a mindful slow pull. So I continue in this way, all the while talking to her.

In this union, I share my intention. Dude, ya gotta move out…they issue fines for your very existence and people complain about you….often. And she shared, ok, spend some time with me. I’ll show you what to do, just listen and come visit often.

The visiting often is her sense of humor. See, in order to ‘remove her’ I now have committed to regular visits as she continues on her way spreading a message.

“Come close, pull me with your bare hands, slow your life down, quiet your mind and visit often. I have much to share, it’s been a while since we talked.”🌱

Todays gardening musing. Life is an experiment, guided by nature. When we realize that we’re truly not the ones in control of it all, we can surrender to the magical flow.

Lay down your arms and surrender to this flow.

These are the remains of our harvested fall Potatoes. These guys have been stored in our basement in paper bags over the winter with the intention of using them for seeding our garden this year.

This is the grand reveal. I’m amazed that NONE were rotten. I’ve truly never seen such robust and thriving potatoes.

I’m slightly winging this…and envision I’ll pick off the long roots, leaving the shortys. Then chop in half some of the larger potatoes. And ‘chit’ them - which is to expose them in indirect sun to allow the roots to develop a bit more & seal the cuts.

How’s you experiments going?

The abundance of seeds and growing food 💫🦋🤸‍♂️
It’s so beautiful to play with seeds from last years growth.

We harvested seeds from the cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and Ox Hearts tomatoes grown in our greenhouse. And this is the result of our germination test. It’s so beautiful and exciting to see them sprouting. Chad threw a bunch of seeds in wet paper towel and into a baggie they went.
We kept them wet and they germinated within 4 days (maybe 3?). Then we kinda forgot about them for a bit. This is the result. Resilient eh!

So, the tomato seeds are already in the milk jugs and happily outside when the sun shines. Baby plants are a’sprout’n
The approved batches of Cucumber seeds will be planted in the greenhouse soon. We found absolute joy in drinking our cucumbers last year!!

I’ve been experimenting with different ways of growing.
This year it’s the ‘snail’ method with some changes.
Others use an insulated plastic, I’m using fabric - seems to me it would have better wicking and friendlier for the plant.
Testing it out on the marigolds first.
So far it seems like it’ll be fruitful, saw some little sprouts this morning!

What experiments are you starting this year?

(Ps- I did not use the milk jugs for this. Those are for winter sowing projects.)
