One of the realities of running a real vintage arcade is that sometimes 40+ year old machines decide they need a little extra attention. 🎮🔧

Right now we’re in the process of repairing a Galaga machine. The monitor has an issue where it only displays a single vertical line down the middle of the screen. Oddly enough, the game is still “running” — you can actually hear the attract sounds and gameplay happening — but the monitor’s horizontal deflection system has failed, collapsing the entire picture into that one bright line.

These old arcade monitors aren’t like modern TVs or LCDs. They use high voltage CRT technology with components like capacitors, transistors, flyback transformers, and deflection circuits that all have to work together perfectly to draw the image line by line across the screen.

The current plan is to carefully diagnose the monitor, test components in the horizontal circuit, and hopefully bring Galaga back to life without needing to replace the original monitor. Keeping these machines authentic and repairable is a huge part of preserving arcade history.

It’s a reminder that these games were designed to last a few years at most, and it's always kind of amazing to me they they’re still working hard decades longer than they were designed to run.

We’ll keep everyone updated on Galaga’s road back into service. 👾

This loaded-up flavor is packed with chocolatey goodness, crunchy mix-ins, and enough sweet chaos to make your inner 8-year-old very happy. It’s the kind of ice cream flavor that feels like it was designed by a kid staring out the window watching construction equipment all day — and honestly, we respect that. 🚜

Shaw’s has been bringing some wonderfully weird flavors into our lineup, and Dump Truck fits right in beside favorites like Unicorn T***s, Key Lime Pie, and Coffee & Cream.

We’ve added another wonderfully ridiculous flavor to the lineup… introducing Unicorn T***s!

This magical creation starts with vanilla cake batter ice cream then swirled in is a sweet pink marshmallow frosting ripple, finishing off with a generous helping of rainbow chocolate chips. 🌈🍦

Between Foothills and Shaw’s, our freezers are becoming a rotating collection of nostalgic classics, strange discoveries, and flavors you definitely won’t find everywhere else. With 46 spots to fill, every visit is a different adventure.

Big news at Grand Scoops! 🍦🦝

We’ve expanded our lineup by adding select flavours from Shaw's Ice Cream alongside our main supplier, Foothills Creamery.

Foothills is still the backbone of our cabinet, but Shaw’s gives us access to some wonderfully weird and creative flavours like Unicorn T***s, Dump Truck, Coffee & Cream, Key Lime Pie, Watermelon Sherbet and more!

Adding Shaw’s doesn’t mean replacing anything — it means flavours will rotate more often, and every visit to Grand Scoops will be a different mix. You might come in one week for a classic Foothills favourite, and the next week discover something completely new.

Both companies make high-quality Canadian ice cream with a rich, creamy texture and similar butterfat content, so we can mix and match without ever compromising quality.

Our goal has always been to make Grand Scoops the kind of place where there’s always something new to discover. 🍨

Back when I was a kid growing up in Vernon, BC, there was an arcade I absolutely loved — and one of the weird little things burned into my memory was those classic 90’s drink cup patterns. You know the ones: teal squiggles, purple streaks, bright neon chaos.

Apparently, you can even still get the cups, the design is called 'Jazz'. I probably won't be doing that because the minimums are very high and I just don't sell that many milk shakes, but it's a goal to shoot for I suppose.

So while I don't use the retro cups, I did make a point to use those pinks and teal colors from that cup design in my logo. I think it helps recreate that feeling of classic arcades and simpler times… although admittedly we’ve made one important upgrade over that arcade I went to as a kid:

We traded the stale cigarette smell for the scent of fresh baked waffle cones. 🍦🎮
