I was going to let this be, but it continues to smoulder in my mind.
What used to be a colourful storefront and vibrant community hub is now a dusty display of a single yellowing plant beside some awards for culinary excellence. It has only added insult to injury. Not only did we lose The Bicycle, but we have gained nothing in its place. Northing more than what seems to be a “supper club” open a few hours a week.
The current proprietors are now trying to sell what two and a half years has built. We weren’t even given the option to do so after working hard for more than a decade. All we got out of our forced exit was an opportunity to manage rumours about us not paying our bills or being unwilling to renew because of a supposed rent hike… which again, for the record, were only rumours.
This is what hubris looks like. I understand that business is business, sometimes things don’t work out and more importantly, there are human beings behind these transactions with feelings and pressures that are just trying to follow their passion. This however is deeply disappointing considering we were in the very least promised a “casual” restaurant that would be “simple and open to all” in our stead. I can’t say I didn’t warn them about what they were getting into.
I can only hope that this somehow leads to some sort of resurrection. It would be nice to walk somewhere to meet a friend or have a date, grab a beer, a fresh meal and maybe watch a band or football game… just like the good old days.
